I have a 1955 S Lincoln Penny that I call the "Cracked Skull" variety for a lack of better words.

You can feel and see an indentation from his eye right up in to his hairline. Is this a listed variety or just an oddity?

I hope the scan shows it up well?

"Cracked skull" die cracks are fairly common on 1940s and 50s wheaties but it should be a raised feature. If it is an indentation, then the coin has probably been damaged/dented but larger pics are needed to be sure.

About eight years ago I purchased over 30 original bank wrapped Lincoln Wheat cent rolls from the 1950's, included was four rolls of 1955s... I found many "cracked skull" and "BIE" cents in these four rolls, plus a large number of "BIE" cents from other rolls (mostly 1956 & 1956d) and realized that they must be common and not worth much... I set some aside and spent the rest (all coins were in B/U condition)... I could dig them out and post some photos if anyone is interested... (I would just have to locate this thread again)

Die cracks are raised. Incuse marks on a coin is damage. These are raised. There is actually a 9th die crack on the throat. I missed that years ago.
