I added a few pounds of precious metal to the interior of my safe today. I got a good ol' Colt .44 Peacemaker. I call it my insurance policy. I don't have any kids, and my Wife doesn't have the combination. Only two people will ever see it. Me and the guy who tries to take my gold. As a bonus, the old Peacemakers are going up in value faster than a lot of things that a guy could purchase. It was made in 1879, so it has aa lot of experience. It even has four notches on the grip, but who knows what that could mesn.

Probably that means your gun was owned by a want-a-be. Most gun fighters did not notch there guns.

Non of the famous outlaws of history ever cut notches in their firearm. During a rare interview in his later years, Wyatt Earp was asked how many notches he had on his pistol. Rumor has it that he called the interviewer a few choice names, explained that he was no tin horn and promptly threw him off the porch where they were sitting.

But Hollywood loves to make things more exciting, and so for many years they always referred to how much of a bad guy the evil doer in the black hat was, by the "notches" on his gun.

Guns are no big deal I have so many around the house they are just there. In fact I carry 100% of the time on the farm and about 50% off the farm. Everyone in the family knows how to shoot and are darn good shots. My older daughter now carry's 100% of the time. Pa permits this with a permit.

It is a good gun to collect if it is in good condition.

I have seen notches on the butts of rifles and I got the distinct feeling that they were real, and at the time, recent.

The year was 1970. The place was Peshawar.
I was travelling overland India to Europe.

A couple of miles away from the outskirts of the town, we came across some tribesmen. In that part of the world, they all carry rifles. One guy proudly showed his rifle. There were 14 notches on the rifle butt.
I got the message.

I'm hoping the guy trying to take the gold only sees the business end and not the notches. Well, actually I hope no one tries to take the gold, but if they did...
Rest in Peace

Back in 1980, I had 4-5 guys helping one day, customers lined up and out the door.

Someone mentioned the convenience store across the street was held up, and I replied that it's a shame you can't make a living without getting robbed.

The customer replied "you don't seem too concerned".

Without another word, every guy showed he was armed, followed by the guy in the back pumping his 12 gauge. I didn't even realize a couple of the guys brought guns.

"Oh, I see. He'd die of lead poisoning before he got to the door."

Yep.

That must have been hilarious. Fredd. If I had a coin store, jewelry store, or pawn shop I would be packing and also have my Great Grandpa's side by side hung behind the counter. It's an old damascus 12 so I recently had it tubed down to a 20 so I can shoot it with modern ammo. $650 was well spent to bring my Great Grandpa's gun back to life with 00 Buck.

I told the wife that: I am buying more silver; she said: Sure, we can set those aside for our new born....
Then I told her that: I want to buy a gun; she said: No, you have one and I can't barely handle it, I don't need another one....

Enough saying, I continue to buy my silver......

My next gun is a Colt 1911.

I have a 1911 model Combat Commander as my primary home defense weapon. I bought it when our kids were small. One of the things I like best about it was that the hammer spring is so strong that our kids could not cock it. It pretty much takes the strength of at least a husky teenager to bring that hammer back. That was good because that allowed me to keep it loaded and not worry about the kids messing with it... unlike my S&W Mdl 19 .357 mag. It has a nice smooth action that virtually anyone can work, so I always kept it unloaded and up high in the closet when we had little ones scampering about the house.

My favorite handgun is a Ruger Single Six chambered for the powerful Remington .41 mag round. It shoots flat, hits hard, and anything shot with it STAYS shot and doesn't just jump up and run off afterwards. In spite of its heavy recoil, I can shoot it well, usually putting 4 of 5 rounds (I keep the hammer down on an empty chamber) into a 1.5" circle at 25 yards. This makes it some pretty strong bad-guy medicine.

My most recent acquisition in the firearms realm is a Mossberg 500 pump action 12-ga. shotgun. This is my home invasion discourager. I keep it loaded with 8 rounds of 21-pellet #4 buck. I do need to get a really bright LED type mini-flashlight that clips onto the magazine tube, though. It's a great weapon but two hands are needed to operate it, so I can't hold it and a flash-light at the same time.

My antique gun is an 1858 Remington cap and ball .44 cal. pistol that Great Grandpa completely ruined by having it converted to fire .44-40 cartridges. Yes, that was a huge improvement for him in terms of loading speed but it sure messed up the collector / resale value!
