it is my understanding that peace and Morgan dollars carry a higher premium than other 90% coins.. is this true, specifically in regards to Peace dollars?

this would be for grades xf -au

Silver dollars have more silver than $1 in minor silver coins. Franklin half dollar = .36169 oz silver
.36169X2=.72338
Peace dollar contains .77344 oz silver. The reason we are blessed with so many Morgan dollars in todays collector market is because that small difference in silver motivated the mint to stike massive amounts of dollars instead of minor coins to meet the mandated silver usage requirements of the 1878 Bland-Allison act.

ok great!

but when I go to buy, I notice that Peace dollars sell slightly above melt, sometimes a lot more..

if I were to sell , would I expect the same?

You should get more than melt unless they are damaged, slicks, culls, or holed/plugged. Earlier you mentioned XF/AU grades; in those grades and problem-free, there is a definite market premium to melt value for common dates. It varies from 5% to 15% in most cases. That's only $1-$3 per coin but adds up for people who sell rolls or 100/1,000 coin bags.

Check some buy prices here for a better idea: http://www.apmex.com/Category/90/Pe...21_1935.aspx

Peace dollars do not have the following that Morgan dollars have but those who do collect them are usually willing to fight it out for a coin they really want, where allot of Morgan collectors will just wait for the next one to come along

So true Bryan1315, Peace dollars with "the look" sell for huge premiums due to how few have that strong sharp strike that is more common on the Morgans.
