okay, couple of questions,

looking online ( mint.ca) I see 1997-2001 NO circulation loonies issued, but on ebay they can be found. most are NOT listed as proof or specimen, and look a whole lot like a circulation strike? are these just pulled from PL and SP sets?

1997-1998 quarters, zero minted for circulation, ebay they can be found as either proof or SP. some of the proofs are frosted, some are not. some of the SP appear to have the woodgrain type background (dont know if there is a technical term for that?) with the mirror highlights, other appear as plain old circulation type finish (maybe its just the pictures).

so question,
is there a place on the website that shows mintage numbers for PL and SP finishes?

and are there different types of PL and SP finishes? (ie, proof frosted or plain, or SP mirror highlights or plain etc?)

thanks

The circulation strike finishes on the 2000-2001 loonies are ones that would have been taken out of sets and offered up individually on ebay.

Specimen finishes have changed over the years. I recall seeing a thread on here which showed some comparisons. The specimen finish used to be a little more subtle than it is today.

For 1997 to 2001 loonies were only released for specimen or proof.

For other mintages, try the RCM annual reports.

Though no '97-01 loonies or '97,'98 quarters were issued for circulation, they were included in sets in all three finishes, circulation, specimen and proof.
'97 circulation finish loonies and quarters come from the "oh Canada" and baby birth year sets,as the PL sets contained specimen finish coins that year.'97 specimen finish loonies come from these PL sets, the '97 specimen set contained a special loonie.
For '98-'01 PL sets are made of circulation finish coins and specimen sets contain the regular loonie in specimen finish.
For all the years proof strikes come from proof sets.
For mintage numbers I suggest you look at the sets in Charlton's and add 'em up.(J&M may also have mintage #'s for the sets on their site)

PS.the three finishes for these years are
circulation finish - brilliant relief on brilliant background
specimen finish - brilliant relief on lined background
proof finish - frosty relief on mirror back ground

thanks

i dont know why but I dont care for either SP or PL (they pop out against the rest of circulations in the date set, plus they just look.. "wrong" for some reason).

I have received a 1998 and 1999 loon also a 1997 quarter in my change someone has spent.
Also a 2004 loonie with flock of geese in my change.
I sold the 2004 to get the 1998 and 1992 caribou quarters.

Hello, although the proof is the nicest finish I do like the more recent speciman finish. They may never end up holding value but that finish has caught my eye since 2002 and have purchased all speciaman sets since then.
