Hi and welcome!
I assume you must be referencing an old message string witrh Silvermaple but I don't remember it.
If you have a 44 tombac that will be a great win for you. If it is not tombac, it would be the regular chrome plated steel or perhaps the not-too-hard-to-find missing-chrome steel coin. I hope that this is not a missing-chrome coin that has become corroded. The colour and patina seem a little odd to me for tombac. I fear it may be a corroded steel coin.

Mike, are photos of that coin on the RCMP site? I don't recall you showing me one of those Chinese coins...

I hadn't even made the jump to the fact it might be a Chinese coin. I just didn't feel comfortable that it wasn't a corroded coin.
Do the Chinese coins start with a fake blank or do they take a real coin and chemically treat it to look tombac?

Please note the D as well as the G of Obv. Also, see the cut in the hair at the top. Quick one on the Rev. Rim at 1130. Yup, a fake. Hope you did not pay too much for it. There are more markers, but look for yourselves.

Q.: When is a nickel not a nickel? A.: When it is a tombac.
Weird, but true.
(I have an Unc. 1942 beaver version as well.)

Here's a link on CCF of a fake one I bought from the Big Tree Coin Company awhile ago just to learn more about the fakes: https://goccf.com/t/88814

I was Googling this coin the other day and didn't find much recent information. There was a reference on an auction back in 1999 that there was only 1 known to exist (same reference is made on the CCF ref page for this coin) and that one was certified by PCGS. Anyone have current information on the population of this coin?
p.s. I also read that the quick test is if it's magnetic it's corroded steel. Tombac is non-magnetic.
