Based on ebay a bag of 100 nickels goes for ~$50. That'd put the bag at $500 for 1000 nickels. However, those bags on ebay are fully searched bags filled with bottom of the barrel nickels most of the time. If you or he are feeling devoted you could sort them and see what's in the bag. If you have any key dates or higher grades that $500 could go up.
Rest in Peace

All depends. How good a freind is this person? Can he be trusted that the bag wasn't opened and anything good taken out? How is it known that there are $50 worth in that bag? Did he count them or was it written on the bag? Way to many stories around about my Dad, Aunt, Mom, etc leaving me these coins. ebay is loaded with such stories.
Now putting that aside, I'd recommend asking him if you could open that bag and skim through them. Never know might all be without dates and only saved for the fun of it. Or could be a really great find. Or he got them from somewhere and just wants to make a profit. I would just want to sort of check them out before making any offers.
At a Dollar a coin, $500 for the lot, would be OK if they are decent, with dates and even if all common dates.
I'm still curious as to how it is known about the quantity.

It doesn't sound like the buddy is trying to take advantage. He just asked him to make an offer. Doesn't sound like the buddy even knows melt value.
