I just bought this coin today for melt price. I realize it isn't in the greatest condition but I'm hoping it might be worth a little more than melt since it's the scarcer large date variety. Also, sorry about the picture quality. I can borrow a better camera if these pics aren't good enough.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Is that a piece of solder on the reverse? You can't go wrong buying a genuine quarter-eagle at melt price.

XF Details.

Yes, it looks to me like it is a piece of solder though I'm not certain. I thought about trying to remove it, but don't want to damage the coin trying.
Thanks for your reply.

Probably EF-40 details. This coin often has strike weakness on Liberty's hair so it could be a higher technical grade than the hair detail suggests. According to Douglas Winter's book on New Orleans gold there are just 75-85 survivors known so it is quite a scarce piece.

The pebbly texture plus the apparent solder blob on the back suggests it was used for jewelry. To the right buyer it should definitely be worth more than melt but it might not be easy to find that buyer. Still, I think you made a shrewd purchase. Congrats!

to the forum peter. Definitely worth more than melt. If in fact only 75-85 survivors known you should do quite well when you find that interested buyer. I don't own any slabbed coins but I feel this is worth a trip to ANACS for a "genuine" with a details grade.

I'd send this coin to NCS for conservation before grading as it is a pretty rare gold piece. Though not especially expensive in grades below AU, I think this coin would net out at VF still if the solder was expertly removed and you resubmitted it to a grading company it might go EF40 with no issues, that is a big "if" on the solder removal and how good it is done.

On the other hand the scratch in front of Liberty's head and behind her head will most likely keep it out of a non details holder. Probably would grade Ex-Jewlery, scratched VF30 Details.

Westcoin I didn't know I could get conservation done on a problem coin . I'll look them up and see if I can find out what is involved. Thanks for the tip.
Rest in Peace

, Peter4805!

Contact http://www.crs-stockton.com they can tell you if NCS will remove solder, and if they know NCS won't, what CRS will charge.

If NCS will remove it, then go with them for removal and slabbing.
