Australia only had 1 round silver 50 cent coin
But Canada has heaps of different date silver and cu/ni round 50cents
Both have the queens portrait and a coat of arms on them.
I only have 3 coins to go to complete my Aussie 50's set so I am now collecting the Canadian equivalents.
I have them in the same 2x2 album and they complement each other perfectly

apleange107: So do I.

I have spoken to Stuart Devlin, the designer of the Australian 50 Cent coin.
He was commissioned by the Australian Government to design all of the original definitive decimal reverse designs for the (then) new decimal coinage.

He had no instructions on the choice of subject matter for the coins except for the 50 Cents, where an Australian Coat of Arms was required by the Parliament. He was, however, allowed to make his own interpretation of the Coat od Arms, and the final result is as you see. He remarked to me that is was his least satisfying design of the series.

Having said that, the Canadian Coat of Arms is obviously oficially formal, but it has turned out quite well on the 50 Cents. I prefer it to the Australian (one).

I am not too keen on the later obverse designs of the Canadian coinage, though. The Machin Bust as seen here, is the best, IMHO. Not too keen on the Gillick bust, either.

YEARS ON COINS
The odd thing about Australia's coins is that pre-decimals had the years on the reverse, yet decimals now have the year on the reverse (with the queens head). I'm not sure how many Commonwealth countries have done the same.
SOME OTHER COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES:
UK year was on reverse, but now it's a bit mix-mashed some years & denominations are on the obverse...odd...only the Brit's would confuse themselves even more.
New Zealand pre-decimal date was on reverse, decimal was obverse.
Canada has always had the year on the reverse.
Fiji pre-decimal date was on reverse, decimal was obverse.

The Commonwealth will be a long list to put together...so I'll leave it at that.
