I've decided to try to do an Australian coin type set as a companion to my Canadian type set.
My basic criteria are:
Only coins intended for circulation.
Any change in Monarch, portrait, obverse or reverse design or legend counts as a new coin.
New alloy or material counts as a new coin.
Mint marks, dates, errors, accidental varieties do not count as new coins.
NIFC that accidently circulate do not count.

That being established, here are my tentative pre-decimal and decimal lists, excluding dollars and $2 coins, of which I am collecting all circulating issues.

The extra dates/grades on some lines indicate coins I already have.

I had that in my first listing Nance, but in a response to someone else's post Sap indicated that the Melbourne Florin wasn't intended to circulate.
So, Yes or No?

By the way, looks like you're in no danger of running out of coins to send me now.

In addition to Sap saying leave it out, the fact that Krause says that little bugger goes for $70.00 influenced my decision a bit.

Krause might be wrong there. Latest edition says $100 (F) to $600 (BU).
I will give, say, $150 each (or more) for as many as anyone wants to offer.

It was sold at a premium (three shillings) to raise funds for the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. 75,000 were minted and 21,000 remained unsold and were returned and melted down.
I'm with Sap; not a circulation coin (and I would love to have one).

Jeff

These normally go for $300-$400 and yes they weren't intended for circulation.
In my opinion a type set should only include the different obverse and reverse designs without the commemorative coins.

ADMISLSE, are those all intended for circulation / circulating coins? The ones of those I can find in my Krause show special metal and very low mintages so I assumed these were NIFC.

Heheh! When we're done with the $2's, I'll start working backwards with 50c. Will you still be able to get the Pres dollars?

Yes, I'm still getting them, just direct from the mint now instead of my bank. Shuold have the next quarters and next dollars out to you around the first of March. No 2012 small coins sighted here yet.

jgfindring: As Nancy has indicated, the 1934/35 Melbourne Centenary Florin is omitted. This is the scarcest type in the Florin series.

They may cost you a bit, but a type well worth having, if you have the cash enough to buy it. Cost around $250 - $600 In the higher grades, this is the cheapest coin, but in the lower grades, the reverse applies, because the Melbourne Centenary Florin commonly turns up in nice condition - it was not really intended for circulation.

Some of them did in fact circulate. That explains the lower grades, down to minimum VF. Very similar issue circumstances to the American Commemorative Half Dollar series.
