I just noticed these cracks right above the letters on my new 1896. What do you think?

Die cracks are rarely indicators of VAM varieties, they do make some VAM coins though like the 1887-P Donkey Tail, 1888-O Scarface and the 1921-S Thornheads.

The 1896 has a few good VAMs to look for I sugest a trip to http://www.vamworld.com/1896-P+VAMs

This will set you on the right path to pair up your obverse and reverse to find the correct VAM.

Interestingly, that is a common area for die cracks across the whole series. Die cracks can be useful in determining what particular VAM you have. I've used them, along with other indicators, to narrow down more than a few specific VAMs.

As WestCoin said, 1896 has a lot to look for so I would personally use the vamworld website as he suggests.

As noted the crack is normal in its location, but its cracks are like fingerprints, one would have to study the listings on vamworld reverses to try and find a match, HOWEVER...
Vams are not found just by the cracks alone which are later die progression features...the coin should have normal date placement and other BASIC features to reference to, the secondary features such as die cracks can confirm these primary attributions...Take some photo's of the whole coin and date placement and other features you find interesting for analysis...G
