Are $1 silver certs worth anything over face if they are beat up (edited by staff to make forum appropriate)? I've got 9 of them that I found, and believe me when I say that there is absolutely nothing special about them. I took them to my coin shop and he said to spend them. He wouldn't even give me $10 for the 9 of them.

They're not even worth taking a picture of.

Any ideas, or are they just spenders?

whilst I don't know if they're worth any more than face value if it turns out they aren't worth any premium then give them to a kid and try and spark some interest in collecting. I think this is a better thing to do than just spending them.

Sometimes I do just that. I'll give this kind of stuff to my kids to spend at lunch and they'll show all of their friends. My kids absolutely LOVE taking $2 bills to school for lunch. I always pick up however many the tellers have when I go to the bank. Once I got stuck with $60 in twos when I was on my way to Myrtle beach for vacation.

My wife hates my obsession with coins. She hates the twos even more.

If they are in that ruff of a condition then spend them. Here is an idea, try selling them to a pawn shop they might not know they are only worth face value.

SJUHawks,
You mention that your wife hates your obsession with coins (as mine did for years)... That was until I filed for divorce (after 34 years of a horrible marriage) and to my surprise, both her and her lawyer went after half of the retail value in court... By then, I had a very large USA & World error coin & currency collection that I placed in my Will for my granddaughter's college education... My now ex didn't give a darn about her granddaughters education and wanted half of what I had... I believe that should you ever cross the bridge that I did, you'll find that your wife cares more about your coins then you know...

(Sorry, I just had to vent when I read your post)

I used to do the same thing and the tooth fairy would leave two dollar bills under my kids pillow when they were younger
