I just bought a Canon SX40 after seeing the results another member has had with one. I've had the camera less than 24 hours and I am very pleased with it. Here are a few photos I've taken so far: Edited by nolawyer 02/14/2012 10:01 pm

Really nice images! What kind of lighting set-up are you using?

Photos are coming out nicely, the color balance looks great! and focus seems dead on! I love the Canon compact cameras!

Yeah, I'd be very pleased if I were you, too.

I think this is a good example showing that "lighting is everything". Nolawyer has a very good lighting setup, and the camera is taking a picture of it well. End result...pictures to be proud of.
Except for one thing...nolawyer, you just have to work on getting the coin so it's not rotated in the image! All 4 images are rotated, 3 CW and 3 CCW. While lighting is ultimately the difference between a good and mediocre shot, it is still #4 on the priority list:
1) Focus 2) Composition 3) Exposure 4) Lighting

At what distance and attack angle? Lighting is my big weakness right now and I am trying to work out a suitable solution with my jansjos. Thanks!

Thanks, rmpsrpms! I will work on that.
oih82w8 - The lamps are about 4-5 inches above the coin and they are close to pointing straight down. The center of the light of each lamp is not directly over the coin. The camera lens is about 14 inches away from the coin.

Nolawyer...you're showing a LOT of luster with your lighting, and a lot of blown-out highlights, so you can probably afford some diffusion. I'd suggest covering the 12:00 Jansjo with one or two layers of tissue paper and see what that does...Ray

Here are some new photos that I've taken. I really was contemplating going the DSLR and macro lens route, but I didn't want to spend the money necessary for that (especially since I don't take photos of anything but coins.) I really am happy that I found this camera. I haven't had a chance to try out diffusion, yet.
