I have 3 coins that I would like to send in for grading. A 1916-D Mercury dime in G-4 to G-8 grade, a 1917-D Type 1 Standing Liberty quarter in AU grade, and a 1876-S Trade dollar in VF-30 grade. I have looked at the top 3 graders websites and have a general idea of the costs. ANACS being the cheapest, NGC and PCGS being close to the same except with NGC since I am a ANA member I wouldn't have to join. I couldn't find any info on the NGC site about the cost of shipping and insurance. If I had to I could come up with 2 more coins to make the 5 minimum, but they are common date Morgans in MS-64 grade I think. I have read on CCF that just for authentication ANACS is just fine but one of these days I will be selling these coins so I need to take that into consideration also. If I went ahead and joined PCGS for $129.00 and receive the 4 submittals does that include the shipping and insurance? Just trying to figure all this out and what would be the best way for me to go. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

The TPG submittal forms can be confusing, but I sent in 13 to ANACS back in OCT 2011 and got 'em back at the end of the month. I don't know about the FREE submittals through PCGS or NGC other than you will need to annotate your CC info just in case you made any "financial errors". I don't think that insurance (back and forth) or shipping is included. Give 'em a hollar through their customer service and give 'em the skinny. Or you could submit them through an authorized coin dealer.

The shipping and insurance charges are NOT included in the PCGS $129.00 deal. I would personally go with PCGS or NGC for coins I would be selling someday. I feel they bring the best re sale money. You would be responsible for shipping both ways and insurance on any coins sent to any company.

If I were you, probably go the $39 NGC route. You can direct submit at somewhat reasonable grading prices. I am seriously considering sending in my 5 oz ATB's on their special...but $200, plus $39, plus shipping adds up. BUT, the total would be 50% off of normal.

Also if you are submitting them yourself, you will want to use USPS Registered mail, the package must be sealed with brown kraft tape and paper, I use a grocery bag cut up like wrapping paper, the insurance is extra over $50.00 which you will want to add, This is absolutely the safest way to ship coins, as every step of the way it must be signed in and out by anyone that handles the package. FedEx is fine (they will NOT insure nor pay any insurance claim on coins lost) but have your own shipping insurance purchased else where. I only use registered mail or hand over coins in person at coin shows to TPG's. Have not lost one yet! I mostly use ANACS they return via FedEx but have their own insurance company, like most coin shops/dealers that ship a lot. REGISTERED MAIL ONLY - if you don't have separate insurance - I can't stress that enough!

No need to join NGC since he is a ANA member, he already has every advantage the $39.00 package offers. I can't seem to find my NGC submission forms, it has all the different prices for return shipping that changes with the worth of the coins because of insurance. If you say your coins are close to what they deem them to be worth they usually do not say anything about it. Don't try to send the 1916-D in and saying its a 150.00 coin though because they may call you on that one

Determine what it will cost you to ship the package to them by Registered mail. The cost to return it will probably be about the same. A word of advice, if you are shipping via the USPS and the insured value of your shipment is over $800 (and with a 16-D dime it will be) Registered mail is not only the safest way to ship, it is also cheaper. Something else to consider if you have high value shipments, Registered mail is the ONLY way you can insure for more than $5000. Any other mailing class has a maximum insurance liability of $5000, Registered mail can be insured up to $25,000. Why? Because it is SAFER, so they are willing to risk the higher liability.

In your position - I get the impression this is essentially a one-time shot - I'd be looking into piggybacking a submission to PCGS through a dealer you trust, if you have such a relationship. Since resale is a consideration, PCGS is the default choice.
If you're not already friendly with a PCGS-affiliated dealer, you could probably still go this way but it'd likely cost you more.

After two days of checking each of the 3 grading websites and a trip to the post office and one call to NGC I have figured out the cost of each one. PCGS, I would have to join the club which is $129.00 which would get me 4 submissions. Shipping to them using registered mail would be $22.25 using a flat rate box. There shipping cost back to me is $25.00 for a total of $176.25. NGC, As I am a ANA member I would not have to join a club but each coin is $30.00 for a total of $90.00. Shipping to them is also $22.25, with the return shipping at $25.10 for a total of $137.35. ANACS, each coin is $19.00 for a total of $57.00. Shipping to them is also $22.25 and the return shipping is $25.00, for a total of $104.25. Your right SuperDave, this is a one time thing for me, I am not even sure I need the SLQ.... graded but I thought since I am going to send the others why not this one too. PCGS, while it is my first choice, seems to me to be on the high side, while ANACS is more reasonable, when it comes time to sell will I get the full value that the coins are worth? So right now NGC is the one I will probably use. I also thought about your idea SuperDave, piggybacking, but the closet dealer is in St. Louis, 100 miles south, and I have only dealt with them once. I guess I could check and see what they would charge, the guy that sold me the Trade dollar said it would cost $45.00 for him to send it in. Thought I would post an update, as always opinions and advice is welcome, and appreciated.
