Japan 1 Mon Date? - Coin Community Forum

The photos aren't that big on that site, so it is hard to compare, since the characters and details are so small. wheatiefan Pillar of the Community United States 507 Posts	Posted 02/20/2012 09:05 am It is difficult to ID these coins because it often comes down to minor changes in calligraphy. I have edited your picture to show some details that are not consistently the same on all coins, so may lead to a definitive ID. The most important is the bottom 'feet' of the 9 o'clock character. They are both hooked rather than straight lines. If I'm reading my book right, there are only four possibilities. Catalog #4.165 and 4.166 are listed as: Kameido, Edo, Musashi province 1737-1739. Catalog #4.167 and 4.168 are listed as: Kawajiri-mura, Akita, Dewa Province, 1738-1750. All of them are listed with a rarity of 'very common'. I think 4.167 is the best fit, but I am a novice so take that with a lump of salt. I would love for a more experienced collector to chime in.
