One of the coins that arrived today. I am very happy--the coin has a lot of presence in-hand, and the patina is just like the photo.
Now one of the nicest coins in my collection, and the price was reasonable too.

Thanks! I think this one has some of the nicest patina I've ever seen on a Greek AE.
The relief is really striking on Greeks like this coin, and it's large enough to appreciate without a magnifier.

I have seen one or two of these over the years.

My reaction to first sight of this one:

'OH WOW!'

Thanks. The photo doesn't quite capture the impact of holding this coin--it's like a miniature work of art.

You see this patina frequently from Sicilian coins. It must be the volcanic soil? They are not the easiest coins to photograph and capture the in-hand 'look'. It is a nice coin.

It is indeed a nice looking coin and one I am on the look out for. I have bid on several over the past 12 months and always lost out in the battle.
Nice one.

Doug, I can only guess very specific conditions created this patina. If you look closely, it has three stable types of bronze patina--green (malachite), blue (azurite), and red (cuprite). Nice to know my coin has original patina--and is not cleaned then retoned.
Martin, I lost the bid on a more worn coin with similar patina--but then I found this one for not much above the "base price" of examples on vcoins. Like JW, I'm always looking for a good deal, if possible.
