Can anyone tell me anything about a coin that was given to me many years ago?

It says France on the back along with two other words that aren't clear. The first word ends in RD, the second in E. Both are above "FRANCE" Below France is the letter A with three fleur de lis (sp?).

On the other side, it has a picture of what appears to be a royal wearing a crown. I can not read the writing around the edge, except for "1657" which I assume is the date.

Any help would be appreciated. Any guesses on the value?

I cannot be sure without pictures, but my guess is that you have a French Liard. Like this one:

The value will not be great, as all letters are not clearly visible. The grade of conservation is very important for value. Still, it should be worth something.

The "A" means it was minted in Paris.

That's it, Litotes.

My coin is in much worse shape than the one in the link you provided. till, glad to see what it used to look like.

Question: Is 1657 the mint year? The coin in the link you provided is also marked 1657.

Hard to believe something so old isn't worth much.

I had a similar one when I was a kid from a junk box - I was very happy to have a such old coin for almost nothing (something like 5 francs, about a dollar)
It was not as nice as the one posted though, but still very readable.
Old don't mean expensive : you can get nice and readable roman coins for a couple dollars as well :)

Yes, 1657 is the mint year.

As for age and value - you can get several coins made by the Roman empire for next to nothing. It basically comes down to how many coins are conserved to our time. Your liard is not especially rare, unfortunately.

It's not rare, but you have a lot of stories to tell with it.
Value is not the only interesting thing with coins, what's worthless is stories behind them (OK, expensive coins often have an excellent story ...)
