Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to say that I had an awesome experience at a local coin shop, Flying Eagle Coins in Bay City, Michigan. I went there not sure what to expect because I had an unfavorable experience at a different coin shop. I was looking around for a bit and then started a conversation with the store owner. I am a younger gentleman, only 25 and don't even look that. I have gotten negative feed back in similar situations where the store owners are older and think that the youth of the area are not the best (at local gun shops that I have gone to looking to buy a firearm with my CPL, fruit markets, etc.) I was very pleased to find out that the owner of the store was extremely welcoming of a new comer to the coin collecting community. We chatted for over an hour about how to start things up, what to look for, and he even gave me some magazines to read/have. I was very impressed with his shop and his friendliness. I will be sure to continue shopping there and would higly recommend his shop. Thanks John1 for telling me about Flying Eagle Coins! Just had to tell you guys about an awesome mentor in the field of coins

Hi and Glad to hear you had a great experience at the coin shop and found someone that will help you. Don't assume one dealer is like everyone else. Getting to know a dealer well, will help out in the long run, especially if you give them a want list (list of coins and/or grades you are looking for, for your collection). So what part of numismatics or coin types are you looking at? Good luck!

Excellent! It is always good to hear about positive experiences with local coin dealers, proving that many (most) are just normal people like the rest of us.

"many (most) are just normal people like the rest of us."
Your experience is so good to hear.
A word of caution: if a coin dealer is in the middle of a negotiation it is best to back off and to wait. You must have hit this dealer during a slow time. A good dealer knows that you are checking him out, even as he [or SHE!] is checking you out. That is normal. A good dealer is as willing to teach as he is to sell. This is perhaps the most important factor in determining a dealer with whom you have confidence. I have ALWAYS judged a dealer by the willingness to teach. Trust you instinct. You have found one of the good ones. Good for you. Please keep us posted.

stud722, Glad you liked the coin shop. If you get a chance check out the one in Midland. I can also recommend a gun shop in Bay City: Duncans it is a great place very friendly and they have an indoor range and rent guns to shoot in the range. Also in case you didn't know you don't have your e-mail turned on here on CCF. John1

i lived upnorth though, Charlevoix to be exact. Dad is a foot doctor up there and has an office in Gaylord! He used to practice in Bay City years ago. sorry, I know its totally unrelated! but glad u had a good time and was a good experience. I think those midewest places always give you better deals and are more cordial than these city folk here in SoCal

I grew up in Bay City. In fact, the first coin store I ever went to was in Bay City. I bought a G-4 1917 S Mercury dime for $.75. Still have it. I remember how much I wanted to go (I must have only been 7 or 8 years old). My dad promised to take me on Saturday, but we had to clean the garage first. I didn't think we'd make it before the place closed. Thanks for the memories, stud722.

, stud722! Any business is as good as your contact point, whether it's a one-man shop or the UPS delivery person.

And what you did was run into a possibly very smart buisnessman. He knows treating you good is simply creating a new customer and by telling others, you help him in advertising. See how it works already.

Thanks for all the posts guys. John1, I do know of Duncans in Bay City. It is an alright shop, high priced. I do use the range there on occasion. I buy from Kevin Williams place in Auburn (between Bay City and Midland). His prices are much lower and he is willing to show you every gun in the cases if that is what it takes. Great people there, I suggest checking him out. It is a smaller shop, used to be the post office in Auburn. He packs quite a bit in the shop though. The shop is on 9 mile just east of midland road. On a different subject, do banks and credit unions carry new rolls of coins? I am looking for the newer pennies in rolls but am not sure the best way to go about getting them. Wquinn, I currently collect a little bit of everything. My favorites are world coins, especially with animals. I was given a large jug (like a water cooler jug) full of coins from my father to help pay for college. I quickly noticed that there were all kinds of coins that I had never knew that he had. I started sorting the "good" coins from the "normal" coins. I pulled out over 300 wheat pennies, silver quarters, Mercury dimes, many half dollars, dollars, and many many more coins that I am saving rather than paying for college with them. So, right now I have a pluthera of different coins.
