I got my weekly call from my parents last night and we were talking about what was new and I mentioned that I was really finding a lot of nice coins lately. My mother then asked me why I collected coins and to be honest I did not know how to respond. This promped many more questions such as how much is that so and so coin you found worth and are you gpoing to sell it. I thought about this last night while trying to fall asleep and could not come up with a defenative reason as to why I am collecting coins.

I guess for me it really isn't about the money as I have not even attemped to sell any coins I have found, not even the silver halves and dimes.

What say you, what got you into collecting and why do you do it?

For me, it's all about the history that the coins represent (which is why I'm not much of a collector of modern coins). I used to collect antique pocket watches for the same reason. There's just something about holding an object made over 100 years ago that gives me a shiver down my spine.

I do "collect" some modern silver bullion coins as well, but that's more for the investment potential than anything else.

It is a fun hobby and it deals with the country's history. A coin represents its country more than you realize and it can tell you more about it than you know.

Like look at our current coinage, as opposed to the 1800s and then look at the government then and now.

Plus think of it as a mountain climber. Why does a mountain climber climb a mountain? Because it is there.

Plus people are habitual and coin collecting is quite addictive. You might not think of it as money consciously, but sub-consciously you collect, because it is money.

That's why stamps and things like baseball cards aren't doing well. Coin collecting deals with our money and we hope it'll go up in value over time.

If that wasn't true, then why bother grading any coin? Grading determines the value and that's it. That's why Sheldon created the 70 point scale.

That's why grading wasn't really done back in the 1800s. Only the wealthy did it and they weren't interested in the money.

I agree, there is nothing like holding a Morgan dollar in your hand from the 1800's, my mind starts to wonder and imagine the journey that coin has been on. Was it ever used in a poker game by Doc Holiday or was it used by buy some drinks or boots, etc. by Whyatt Earp, etc.

Not important and no.

I collect because I do enjoy it. I enjoy hunting coins, filling holes, and learning.

A Question very difficult to answer, every one has one hobby, mine turned out to be this , I started collecting at the age of 12 ...still I look at a new coin with the same passion and excitement as a 12 yr old... Frankly the answer is "my heat says so"

1) I collect from circulation for the thrill of the "chase"

2) I'm starting to buy & collect the older stuff & bullion coins because it's one thing to see a picture of a Barber, a Merc, an ASE, etc, but it's better to have one of my very own.

Why some people collect and others don't is a mystery to me. You either have that gene or you don't, I can find no other explanation. I've stopped collecting before, but I find that eventually I am drawn to some other collection.

So, the question then is not why collect?, but why coins? I've got a few reasons.

1. Not intended as a collectible. This is a must for me, as I only like collecting things that have some other purpose (which is why I stay away from NIFC and proof coins).
2. A huge variety of items to collect - more than anough to occupy a lifetime.
3. Neat history - Holding a coin that was actually used hundreds of years ago is a kick, plain and simple.
4. As cheap (or expensive) as you want it to be.
5. Small. This is important to me, as I live in a small space and already have some hobbies that take up more room.

It's simple. You collect because you like coins. There doesn't have to be a grand answer.

I enjoy collecting coins. I love getting new coins. I love filling that next hole in my album. Why do I collect? My answer is always "I like coins". Why haven't I sold any of the silver dimes that I have found from roll searching? Because the hunt it took to find them and the history they hold, is worth more than the money to me. I enjoy the sound, feel, and look of silver coins, I'd rather keep them than sell them. If you get great enjoyment out of buying a certain coin, then that is your reason for buying it. That is your reason for collecting, because you get enjoyment out of it.

Some people collect cars that they never drive, or swords that they never use. We can ask them why they have that stuff if they never use them. I'm sure they feel the same way I do about coins. They get enjoyment from the items they collect.

Quote of the day. Thanks for that, I really enjoyed this quote as well. Might use it one day as my new "excuse" for collecting ;)

Not only do I enjoy the learning history of coins and coinage, I also enjoy learning the historical context the coins were created in. I have learned a lot about the "why" since joining CCF. I probably enjoy this as much as the actual collecting; so much that if I had to quit adding to my collection, I could still enjoy this method of participating in the hobby.

For me it's mostly about the history. I got interested when I was ten years old and liked the idea that it doesn't have to be an expensive hobby, unless you want that to happen.

I'm fortunate to have some very old large cents, bust half dollars, and a couple of colonial coins. When you hold a coin in your hand that was minted in the late 1700's you can't help but think who else had that coin in their pocket - a founding father?

I also collected houses buying and selling for a while but they take so much more space than coins.

I had a Corvette and dreamed about having several - nice idea but again space is a problem. Coins have worked so much better for me.

A very good point. Collecting coins at face value is very easy to do.

You don't have to have a reason to collect; it's just part of who you are.

Some folks have extensive collections if items that are worth little but they get great satisfaction out of being an expert in their field of interest.

It's actually a good question - your paretns are trying to understand and ask questions about your hobby. I was asked that question recently by a frend as well. I used the example of my 1893 Morgan - how cool is it to hold something from over 100 years ago - it's like a touchstone to the past. The same way people keep antique furniture.
