Toonies must be the redheaded stepchild of coin collectors! (Please do not be offended if you are reading this and are either a redhead or a stepchild ) I've posted three different questions on here regarding toonies and garnered only a single response among all three! No question posted here in this topic...just a comment!

Sorry canuck. I only collect what I can get at the bank in $2 and that limits my abilities to answer questions about proof and specimen finishes.

Hi canuck1us: when it comes to Toonies I have to say that they just don't do it for me. I will keep a sample of anything unusual but other than that... just not my thing. I wonder if most other collectors feel the same? Anyway I went back and reread your posts and I'm sorry that I can be of no help to you, but I am surprised that someone here can't help you out. Either way I just wanted to let you know that your not being ignored, I guess the right people aren't reading your posts.

I was lucky enough to find a misaligned core that you could see around. Had no trouble selling it for $50. It was a really neat coin but I do not collect mistakes, I sell them. Letting it go that cheap to a local dealer has got me some great deals from him.

admittedly my focus isn't on the toonies all that much but I am following them. the sheer number of other canadian coins though vs the toonies which don't really have that much variety just yet kind of allows me that luxury I suppose. Suspect that with the baby lynx's and calfs we're starting to see the additional offerings that will eventually enhance the numbers and subsequent attention due the toonie

with SHAFTA9a, and after that, bring back the one dollar bill. Unless the toonie has an error, clash or crack, I'm not interested.

Since I left Canada in 1997 to move to the U.S., I never had to deal with Toonies much. I mentioned in another thread that I didn't really care for dealing with either them or the loonie as pocket change.
I do like them as part of my collection and I have attempted to compile a list of total possible types. I have come up with a list of 84 or 85 although I believe Charlton may be in error on a couple of these. i.e. the 1996 regular silver proof and one of the 2006 First strike issues. That total number may seem high because I am including the different solo presentations (i.e. first day strikes, presented with stamps, etc. separately.
I still have 30 to go to complete my collection!

There's quite a lot of variety in toonies, hello! Mintmarks and effegies and commemoratives!
I love the misaligned cores. I have a whole jar dedicated to "irregular toonies". When it gets full maybe I'll post some pictures.
Love the toonies! <3
If there's one drawback, though, it's that they can get expensive to keep. They always get traded for coffee, it seems. When I'm super low on cash I look through my kept toonies to see what I can release to the wild, sadly.

Well, they aren't that popular for collecting.

Quote: Well, they aren't that popular for collecting. Ahhh...today's unpopular coin for collecting is a good one to collect! i.e. Everyone held on to their 1867-1967 Centennial dollar bills and never bothered too much with collecting the regular serial #'d ones. Today the 1867-1967 ones aren't worth much more than face value.

Here is my (hopefully) comprehensive list, excluding misstrikes and die variations. The only error coin I have included is the Nunavut Mule. I have also included the 2004 Silver Polar Bear $2 although maybe not technically a "toonie". This list may be of some help to another toonie collector like myself. This should be current through today's posting date.

Nice work
Very impressive list. You don't realize all the variations until you see them all in a row

I like toonies as a unit of currency but not so much as a collectible coin. To me they are more a workhorse coin than a glamour coin. But things can change quickly in the collecting world and today's shunned coin can be tomorrow's greatest hit.
