Check out what I found while going through a cigar box of State Quarters. Lotsa grease in that die. :-)

That's awesome! I always thought that Charter Oak looked a bit like the Crystalline Entity from STTNG and that Greaser helps reinforce it. Cool. Yes, I'm a nerd.

An interesting find and an appropriate name.

I wonder of some of these "greasers" where the missing detail is concentric like this are actually something else. It seems like a weak strike, thin planchet or hard planchet would be more likely to create a circular pattern like this. I would expect missing detail from "grease" to be distributed more arbitrarily.
Awesome example regardless.

@captainfwiffo - I've been wondering the same thing, myself, actually. The loss of detail is certainly due to something obstructing the strike (as it weighs in properly, and there is a bit of extra metal pushed up around the rim as you can see in the pic) but the "grease zone" looks a bit too perfect. I've caught myself taking this specimen out several times since I posted it here and staring at it, pondering. :-)

Good point Capn' and Steve.... some sort of Die Adjustment Strike perhaps?

I've seen other examples with this circular " Greaser" pattern, though less severe. I posted a thread recently about a Wisconsin quarter like this, and I have a handful of post-2006 nickels. There are also lots of examples of classic coins with missing or weak details near the rim, and those are recognized as just being weak strikes, and weak or flat lettering near the rim is common on half dollars. I wonder if we can't throw up the Mike Diamond bat-signal. Perhaps this thread should be in the Errors and Varieties forum.

Pretty awesome find! Pretty cool looking "halo" around the oak tree, makes the tree really stand out.
