Observations:
Obviously after numerous grumblings from the collector community, 2010 was the "back to the basics" year when the Mint returned to releasing standard circulation designs in the sets, rather than filling them with "fantasy" coins. In other words, the coins in the set represent the highest grade available for coins intended for circulation in that year, and as such provide the only direct means by which any individual can purchase truly uncirculated specimens of each coin in a year date.

In 2010, each of the coins in the "back to the basics" set was actually also minted for release into circulation, so in that sense fulfilled expectations, excepting of course the 3 additional commemorative designs - 20, 50, $1 (which were at least available as rolled coins).

The 2011 set also featured the standard designs, although the jury is still out as to whether all denominations will be released in these same designs for circulation with a 2011 date, as the partial year progress only shows the 50 cent with circulation strikes, while the 20's received 3 commemoratives and 1 for the $1 (also available in rolls).

Just 2 years after "back to the basics" started, 2012 comes along with the announced cessation of rolled coins, and a set containing what could arguably be declared a "fantasy" coin. Yes the design may be familiar, but I don't think there's likely to be any circulating versions remotely similar to it - yes, the "hyper-metallic" 50.

Considerations:
In the US, the mint releases annual packs that include all designs in their standard format along with any commemoratives released during the year, for each mint mark (P & D) ie two sets, at the same combined cost as one of ours.

Thoughts:
What would you like to see happen with the uncirculated sets?
• "Back to basics" every year without fail, and only update if there is an official permanent change to a reverse
• Annual set that includes 1 of every circulating coin design released that year
• More "fantasy" coins, especially luminescent ones!
• Pass me the RAM branded Bundy cooler and I'll forget everything ;)
• I [no longer|don't] purchase uncirculated sets so it's largely irrelevant
• My idea is totally awesome and much better than those above. Here it is here...

I think a simple set with each denomination with its standard design, regardless of whether it was minted for circulation + any special commemerayive released that year.

I think this is the best idea for collectors, but the RAM income would drop considerably!

The Ram makes huge profit from sellong these sets. I think it was 4 seperate sets 50c steve had to buy to get all the 50c releases for either this year or last year. Thats a lot of income that they will never want to part with.

Now this is a juicy topic. Where do I start?

In my perfect world we would return to the glory days of having themed Mint sets of circulating coins. In other words it would contain a circulating commemorative which would be the theme of the set.

The last time we had one of these was in 2005 with the sixtieth anniversary of the end of world war 2. Although this was slightly less than perfect as it was crammed with 3 commemoratives and came exactly 10 years after the 50th anniversary mint set.

I think enworb and nancy have voiced what a lot of us think that the RAM's primary motive is profit. They release a generic uncirculated set and then if you want to buy commemoratives you have to buy them individually.

$13.50 for a $1 on a card. It is daylight robbery.

Love your thought & process...this is great...get the Bundy juices flowing:
Pass me the RAM branded Bundy cooler and I'll forget everything ;)

or

Consider mixing a new set by releasing some coin set's with NPA (Note Printing Australia) notes. That would be interesting: a 5c 10c 20c 50c $1 $2 $5 $10 $20 $50 $100...2012 is ideally the 20th anniversary of the $5 officially (non-commemorative) circulating note.

Even next year with the 25th year since Polymer & 25th year since $2 set including all current coins & current notes.

Maybe a set which incorporates all the annual coins (e.g 2010: ATO 20c, Lost Soilders 20c, Burke & Wills 20c & $1, Australia Day 50c etc.)...This set could have sealed (similarly to proofs) UNC coins which can be inserted into a folder. It could also have a notes section for First & Last Prefix notes...possibly to be purchased from the RAM/NPA?Post Office.

It could go on & on...when my mind gets ticking you'd better go hide, because it might just be a time bomb.
