Personally I just see a blob. I will get my SLQ book out later and see if their are possibly any other ways to tell.

I see it as a D. Keep looking, I have found 2 27-S in junk bins, one in G and one in VG.

Are these type of quarters worth any more than melt in this condition? Or not usually?

As a low-grade, banged-up '27-D it belongs in the junk bin where I found it. I agree that it's not the S I had hoped so I'll put it in my own junk bin, probably to be offered in a 90% silver lot on ebay. I paid $6.71; since it's not a '27-S, I estimate I overpaid by about $1.50.
