I spotted this coin in the junk bin and under the shop lights I saw an S mintmark which would make it an excellent deal at melt price. However, now I'm not so sure. Perhaps it's just a D with some damage. How would you all call it?

I see it as a D. Keep looking, I have found 2 27-S in junk bins, one in G and one in VG.

Are these type of quarters worth any more than melt in this condition? Or not usually?

Depends on the date. If this were a 1927-S it might realistically sell on ebay for $25 or so. As a low-grade, banged-up '27-D it belongs in the junk bin where I found it. I agree that it's not the S I had hoped so I'll put it in my own junk bin, probably to be offered in a 90% silver lot on ebay.

I paid $6.71; since it's not a '27-S, I estimate I overpaid by about $1.50.
