Thank you all for the replies so far. I have and continue to read all the books I can right now to "do my homework ".

i do have another question that may be answered by you experts. I have read that all the 4 grading services are excellent but that PCGS is by far the best since they have very difficult grading. is this true or would any of the 4 grading services be fine ?

also, I have read the blue book and red books and the prices are very different. I understand that the blue book is dealer and red is retail but would most collectors just try to get coins at prices at blue or is a good rule to try and get them in between prices.

thank you, I am just trying to get some information to be an informative collector

There is no hard set rule on how much to pay for a coin ,, I know in my own experiance that I have bought coins that were finalised at way over retailand I have bought coins which were below wholesale ,,

I think for me it is the difference between what I'm buying to support my collection and what I'm buying as an addition to my collection.

As for the TPG's Iam a strictly Raw coin collector and I do not fully support the TPG's in any real sense of the word(I only recommend them on certian coins due to the number of counterfiets in the market place and then really only as authenticators ),, but PCGS is the top rated for resale,, this makes them Number one in the market.(Not so much because they are more accurate than the other three)I have found the opportunity to disagree with all of the top four at one time or another on the assigned grades which they have applied to the coins in the slab.

Good questions !!!

You may want to post some of these questions in the main coin forum ,, Many more folks hang out there !

If you like I can split this question off and move it there for you ?just let me know .

You will have to pay above Red Book for really hot coins whose demand has increased since the book went to press (about Jan 06 for the 2007 book). Also, for coins (like low-grade halves) that derive their value primary from their silver content.

For the majority though, you should definitely be bidding below Red Book, and in some cases well below. I've never found a use for blue book. Wholesale prices need to be current to be of interest. Try the greysheet.

If you want to stay on the safe side and expect to get a fair return on your coins, stick with PCGS and NGC as far as graded coins. In that order,in my opinion.I'm guessing your other two grading companies are ANACS and ICG. ANACS is going through some turmoil right now and until things shake out there,I won't be sending them anything else to grade.

ICG...I'm hearing some very bad things the last few days but I won't say anymore until I have some hard evidence next week. Hope that helps some.

I have to agree with Metalman about TPG, I myself would only use them if I had a raw coin like a 1909-s vdb or a 1916-d dime to be sure it is not a counterfeit. It is my opinion that far to many people send raw coins to these grading companies in hopes of getting a grade when the coin is not worth the extra $30.00 they charge to give a grade, that with practise you can grade the coin yourself. Whether the coin is in a 2x2 or a TPG slab the value of the coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it at least that is the way it seems to me.
Bruce.
