I was looking through some of my Morgans today, and I need some help on this 1886. Can anyone take a guess as to what is on this coin? At first I thought it was a golden tone, but it looks patchy and not uniform. It is present on both the obverse and reverse. I can't remember now if this was stored in a cardboard 2X2 or in a roll. This is one of the many Morgans that my dad had stored away for years.

biggfredd- would that be from the cardboard 2X2 holder or was it possibly at the end of an old bank roll?

Tape residue would leave a discoloration that broad on a coin?

After you soak the coin for the night... Is this considered "cleaning"? I have a similar problem with my 1928 Peace dollar.

I'm not sure I want to soak the coin overnight. The VAM book suggests that you should never clean a coin. If I did, though, would it be considered "proper" cleaning or "improper" cleaning? I am curious to see what kind of results I would get.

Darth-

Most likely from a punch board, a gambling device that may hold a dozen dollars and some other goodies.

Like a giant Whitman folder filled with coins, then a sheet of gummed tape covers all the coins and helps secure them. The bottom half has hundreds of holes, each has a numbered piece of paper. If you punch out a number that matches a coin, you win it.

soaking a coin in acetone is not considered cleaning as it will not damage the coins metal at all. You do not want to rub or dip a coin in stuff like silver cleaner or ezest or other products that do take away metal but acetone will not harm the coin at all and a coin can be left in acetone as long as you wish without doing damage. Acetone will not remove toning but it will remove tape residue very easily
