Hi Everyone,
I hope this hasn't been discussed before.
I'm starting to venture outside my NCLT comfort zone into Pre-Decimal coins, looking at the collection being something nice to look at as well as an investment for the future. I am initially looking into getting better examples of Pennies (Choice Unc / Gem Unc graded)
I am yet to grasp grading outside of what I read on webpages and see on coins listed on ebay / websites, and hoping I can clear up a few uncertainties especially around eye appeal / detracting features.

If I use a coin I'm looking at now, from a dealer who uses ANDA grading, they have given it a Gem Grading, but has some planchet streaking on both sides.
If I were to ignore the streaking, the coin appears to technically a Gem graded coin (as far as I can see), and this is where my experience runs out.

What i'd like to know, is when it comes to something as subjective as eye appeal (which I believe has an impact to PCGS grading) how can a beginner look beyond the "it must look shiny and new" impression we have in our heads, to see the beauty that would have seasoned collector drooling over?

I hope this makes sense.

I think the more you immerse yourself in them the more you appreciate varieties that make a coin unique, such as carbon streaking. It is a very personal decision as to whether you like individual coins or something that is exactly as it should have been minted.

Welcome to the real world of coin collecting
If you want the same quality in pre decimals as the the NCLT coins you had better have very deep pockets.
I would caution you to do a lot of research before you shell out for your collection.
Most predecimals HAVE been circulated and a lot of the key dates are prone to forgery.
It is very rare to get a gem pre decimal coin

My pockets aren't deep. But we can only hope to pick the next coin before it takes off! (still want my crystal ball for that)
The coin I'm looking at is available in high grades still (its the 1959 Melbourne Penny)
There are a number of TPG graded MS64s available, but MS65's are harder to come by.
With so many slabbed Australian coins available, its easy for me to just get one of these, but then on the other hand, how would I know that the unslabbed coin wouldn't grade the same (or better) if it were slabbed

How do these meet with your eye appeal

Hi Trout1105,
thanks for posting the photo.
With the value in GEM, the 1959M is $500 in the Renniks, $575 in McDonalds, the big jump between the price in Ch Unc, and Gem is where my main concern is.
The Perth 1959 (PENNY . which is what you have in the photo above) is a lot cheaper.
To me the top 4 pennies in your photo look appealing to me.
The streak on the 1962 doesn't detract at all. where as the colour difference on the 57 on the bottom is a little too much.
The 64 in the top right has an unusual colour, kinda looks purple on my screen.

The 1959 melb, not perth is actually a fairly low mintage and has CV of $575 in gem. By far the hardest lizzy penny! and has lower mintage than many George VI issues. As it isn't as old as the KGVI issues the money for grade compared to mintage is less.

The 64 has about 90% lustre on it.
I don't have a flash scanner or camera.
These coins came from my spares bin, so they are not that rare.
email your mailing address and I will send them to you for free.
Like I said do your research and you will pay less for good coins instead of the bull dust pcgs slobbed horrors

:) If you don't mind me asking, what grade do you have on that one ?
Don't worry, I'm not here to take it off your hands ;)

I wasn't able to email you, I don't think I have enough posts I think.
Thanks for the offer on the coins, don't fuss thou, i'd prefer they go to someone who is just starting out. Haven't really set up anything to hold them in.
