This coin displays the head of Louis XVI on obverse, and revolutionary symbols on the reverse. A mismatch of politics if ever there was one. The date 1792 appears to contradict L'An 4, but I found there were TWO revolutionary calendars. Initially "L'An 1" ( year 1 ) was set at 1789, which agrees with this coin. In 1792 L'An 1 was reset at 1792.

Does anyone know anything about the history of this coin? Where is a good place to look for information on French revolutionary coins. ( I can read simple French ). Am I right in thinking 2s = 2 sous?

diameter 32.9mm, weight 20.9g

two calendars: L'an 4 de la liberte on your coin is descriptive, rather than part of a calendar.

there's a detailed history of The French Republican Calendar or French Revolutionary Calendar here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French...can_Calendar

I'm aware that there's a lot of energy been expended on the correct spelling of
"Roi des Francois" on your coin,
and there are several variations.
