Hello,
I was just starting to look through a huge jar of pennies I've saved for 20 something years and came across this 1997. It has a strange raised extra piece of metal butted up against the 1 in the date. I am in the process of sorting out the copper, but I do have a 16x loupe and I'm checking for some oddities too. Should I just toss this in the zinc jar or could it be something worth hanging onto? Thanks for any info.

Looks to be a die chip, not really worth more than face, so go ahead and throw it in your reject jar.

Thanks, that makes sense a die chip. You'll have to excuse the newbie questions I might ask as I work my way through this jar at a slow pace.

Even so, dsmith, I'd be crazy enough to hang onto that, anyway.
Rest in Peace

It could also just be a plating bubble.
