I just bought this a little while ago and was wondering if any of you are familiar with Verdi-Care. I know BadThad is, I think he invented it but I'm not sure. I'm hoping he chimes in. I want to put this in my album to replace a really nice but cleaned 1908-S. My question is can the blue corrosion be removed with the Verdi-Care ? I imagine it will always have a dark spot but I can live with that......

I use the stuff, that looks like a good candidate for it. I think there would be a darker brown area where it is green. It is a key date though so I am not recommending anything as to what you should do with it. If you have other common wheat cents in a similar condition, I would suggest practicing on them first and make your own choice about trying to improve the 1908 S.
It looks to have very nice details. At least XF.

Thanks, I definitely will experiment on a different coin first. This coin is in excellent shape and I got it cheap because of the corrosion.

I've used Verdi-care also, and I agree this is a good candidate and would echo all of TheNickelGuy's advice about practice specimens, etc.

I've never used the stuff, so I was wondering how well it works.

Are you able to post some before and after photos of coins you have used it with, under a new topic?

I think it would be very informative to see.

1908-S

The before pictures are after a rinse in acetone to remove any latent grease or debris from circulation and to pull any oil or moisture out of the verdigris. This will tend to make the verdigris more noticeable (lighter color), but I think it makes it easier for the Verdi-care to penetrate and remove.

The color difference between the non-green parts of the coins is mostly from the white-balance of the camera (you can see the background white is a bit different). There are a few small hard lumps of verdigris still left afterwards, and some odd color, but it's a pretty big improvement.

There are several other threads with before/after pictures.

Dang, forgot about the acetone. Captwiffo....do you soak the coin very long or just a quick rinse ? I would love to get your results on the Lincoln's.

It wasn't a long soak, I just swished it around in the acetone for a bit. Mostly I wanted to be sure to remove any hand oil that was still on it from circulation. You can see I wasn't even that thorough - there's still some gunk between the rim and the "L" in liberty. I don't know if it's necessary, but it probably can't hurt. It will probably make the porous parts of the verdigris look worse at first because it would remove any moisture or oil, which would lighten the color.

There are a number of threads on using acetone, so please consult those on safe handling, minimizing inhalation, etc. if you haven't used it before.

Thanks Capt., I do appreciate the help. When my shipment gets here I will start a new thread and post before and after pics with the Verdi. I have some corroded cents I will experiment with before tackling the 1908-s.
