Ok..I realize that the rim got hit with the roller (well I am assuming it did)...but it got hit because of the edge. What do you think caused this?

Over 100 views and no comments? Is this just a throw away or is this something that no one knows about?

Well, it certainly *looks* interesting, I'll say. :-)

As to what caused it, I'm not sure it's readily discernible, given how beat-up it is.

I'm pretty sure it has to be damage, but I have no idea what would do that. It doesn't quite look like an early-stage Dryer Coin.

The interesting thing is the edge isn't separated and has full copper plating...thats why I think it isn't PMD. Could be something with the mixture of the metals...
Rest in Peace

It's all PMD. I don't understand what roller in the minting process you are referring to in the first post.

Would a bezel have caused the damage to the edge of the coin? I have several with what looks to be the same edge damage.

Very strange on the edge. Could it be some type of defective planchet?

It does look similar to damage I've seen from bezels or encasements, but who would encase an otherwise unremarkable 1989-D cent?
