I did NOT think gold could tone, any thoughts on this piece? I surf through thousands of coins daily, this one caught my eye, WOW! One of a kind....

It seems to match the one on NGC lookup.
It's not the gold toning, but the copper in the alloy--nice coin!

That is is a gorgeous looking coin! Since these coins contained 10% copper, you can occasionally find them with some color but not nearly as frequent as some of the other metals.

Would not wanna fork out that much chez for a 2.5 gold coin. But if you did, you would be getting a highly sought after one of a kind gold coin. I wonder how many nice graded gold coins with that nice of tone are out there, could not be many.....

MS 60 seems like a picky grade to me as well for such a nice coin....

Good point Silverhawk. Anybody know what prevents it from coming in a point or more higher? The rim dings? Chatter on the cheek? Reverse field marks? Just trying to learn.

True Onebowl. I can spot the nicks obviously way easier on toned Morgans, compared to smaller gold coins one would need a loupe to see properly....

If that coin had a MS-66 grade, they would be asking 2500 to 3 grand I bet for it. So may be a good thing, meaning it may be a reachable coin for many more of us at just over 600....

Are we looking at the same coin? The toning is nice but it is really, really baggy, even for a soft gold coin. If you ask me, I can't believe it is MS.

"baggy" you say CW, you lost me there. What does that term mean?

I did notice a nick on the rim, under the one in the date.....

Lots of bag-marks. Liberty is so nicked and dinged that she looks like the Crypt Keeper.

Baggy means that there a lot of marks. I think the term comes from the fact that coins were often transported in bags and as a result most acquired bag marks. A MS-60 coin is suppose to have a lot of marks just no wear. Like captainfwiffo, I am not completely sure if this is MS not because of the marks but because of the luster. The face looks like there may be wear. That may just be the result of the lighting. If you are interested I have found a prior sale of this coin.

baggy doesn't make a coin not a MS coin. I believe any MS-60 is going to be really baggy and that is what you would expect from this grade but just because a coin has bag marks doesn't make it not UNC. MS-=60 is the lowest a coin can grade that was never circulated (hint MS) so one would expect any coin to look pretty rough if they received a MS-60, but just because it looks rough doesn't automatically make it drop down to a circulated grade when the coin never saw circulation. The only way a coin can grade below a MS-60 is if it saw some circulation. That is why allot of people prefer AU-55-AU-58 coins over lower MS grades because the AU coins will look allot better then their lower MS counterparts, they just circulated a shot amount of time and it made the coin have broken luster in places

I find the toning really attractive, but it certainly has a lot of bag marks. I think it's accurately graded IMO.

so gold can tone? Even if it's 10 percent copper
So a gold coin, with content 585 would tone pretty often I assume?
I'm asking because I'm wondering if I might have a gold token..

I wonder if that coin had any "help" in achieving this color? I've seen a lot of old gold coins but never one that looked like this. Hmmm...
