Are there any differences in the reverse image over the years? Any internet listing available?

I bought my second $5 American Gold Eagle and notice the font type on the reverse was different.

I have a 2002 and 2009 coin. The font is definitely larger/bolder on the 2002 (see photos below). Any thoughts?

Well if you could take both pictures straight on and the same size maybe we could make a comparison.

Here is are some additional photos -
While the photos may not be the best, I think they indicate the difference between the two coins. The type is larger in the 2002 coin (e.g, 'In God We Trust').
Any thoughts? Has someone identified this before?

Your right there was definitely a change made in the hub. The question now becomes when was the hub changed? My bet would be in 2008 when the changed the hubs of the silver eagle. Some more study needs to be done to determine the changes, when they took place, and if there are any mules where a previous years old hub carried over and was paired with the new years new obv hub. (Is there a change in the obv hub as well?)

Thanks for the reply -
There is a difference in the coin design. I have a tendency to take a close look at my expensive/gold coins! When I noticed the difference, I had some concerns regarding authenticity, especially when I found no information readily available.

Since my initial post, I found some photos on the internet - not conclusive, but interesting!
Here are a 1999 and 1990 with large type:

Here is a picture of the 2011, with small type:

I like the small type, as long as it contains the same amount of gold ! The large type makes the design a little crowded, and clumsy

>My bet would be in 2008 when the changed the hubs of the silver eagle.

That is interesting - now I will have to go through my silver eagles!
The date makes sense. So far the date is consistent with my coins and the photos I have found.

2009 - small

2008 - large

Internet photos can be sketchy, so we may be better off get member feedback & photos.

Nothing really obvious/signifant that I can see. I only have the two coins, and would prefer to avoid conclusions based on internet photos. BUT I see some some of the same differences when comparing the dates. The 2002 date appears 'fatter', with less space between the '00'. The 2009 appears thinner. Looks to be a slightly different font. These are some of the same characteristics I saw when comparing the 'In God We Trust' on the reverse. (photos available upon request).

Maybe 2002 was the last yr. on that reverse.
Check the 03,04,05 etc. right on up to the 2008.
See where it ended then check to see if any changes.

I don't have the coins and/or resources to check all the dates inbetween. Internet photos are sometimes tough to link up conclusively to a date. But I did find a 2008 with the large type, and 2009 with the small (see links above). These seems to support change effective 2009.

It is possible there are no changeover mules in which case everything through the 2008's would be large letter and everything 2009 and later small letters. Sounds like the key things to look for would be a 2008 with the small lettering, or a 2009 with the large lettering. (based on what you have found so far.) Also since the designs are the same for all of the gold eagle coins the hub would have changed on all of them at the same time. That means that changeover mules should be watched for on the other denominations as well. I'm really surprised I haven't heard of this change before now. You would think that with as popular as the eagles are they would have made a big deal over it.
