I have a 1971 Kennedy half dollar. It has a strange look. First, it looks dull with a flat metal appearance. Has an aluminum look but not aluminum. Both obverse and reverse have vertical streaks or lines running from top to bottom and on all surfaces raised and background. You could not do this with sandpaper or a file. It would be impossible to create the line and follow all the ups and downs of the surface. Any ideas?

mds308!

They look like planchet striation lines to me.

Here is some excellent info on planchet striations as they pertain to Eisenhower dollars.

Or someone may have painted a clear finish on the coin? The lines might be brush strokes?
