I just purchased this 1838 Large Cent at a local coin show. The cent has a die crack extending through the date as well as a die crack extending down from the upper rim at about 1:00 down to the bun. The star directly behind the bun appears to be doubled as well.

Any variety info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JimR

Jim, I tried to attribute this one for you, but was unsuccessful. The later date cents are harder to attribute than the older ones (at least for me).

Jim, you have an 1838 N-4. The die cracks are the main identifiers for this variety. Nice looking one, too !!!

Thanks for the variety info Auldfartte and the attempt to Susanlynn. Is this a particularly common variety? Does it add any additonal value to the coin?

Jim, the R-1 rarity is considered common. This variety is readily found in all grades, so there is no additional value. I just like the die breaks

Susan: There is a book that will aid greatly in variety identification of the middle dates. It's called "The Cent Book 1816 - 1839" by John Wright. It has outstanding photos and descriptions, and makes attributing these a real pleasure. The book is advertised in "Penny Wise" all the time. I got mine directly from John. He's a great guy.
