I'm new here and was wondering how realistic financially it was to collect some nice examples of colonial currency. I have a two pieces currently and was wondering how rare it was because I have not seen many of them although I have seen some obvious fakes out there. Is there any good books or websites that you would recommend and what price range to the more common Revolutionary War era sell for? Below is one example that I own, sorry for the poor pictures I'm still getting a hang of this. It is in a PCGS holder so that might account for some of the glare. Thanks, Joe2007

Thanks, I mostly collect coins with the exception of a few pieces of fractional currency but when I saw this at a local coin shop. I could not pass up the chance of owning something printed by John Dunlap's print shop which also printed some of the first copies of the Declaration of Independence (1776) & copies of the Constitution for the Constitutional Convention in 1778.

Sorry I can't help you much as this is an area I am not very familiar with. Your note looks like a nice one. I can't say how rare your particular note is but from what I have seen, it appears that colonial notes and continental currency as a whole are not particular rare but there are exceptions. At most shows that I go to, there is usually at least one dealer with a least one stack of them.

http://www.amazon.com/Early-Paper-M...p/0873414152 is a must have! Collecting colonial currency is a really great and rewarding hobby. It was all full of incredible symbolism, with really interesting art. Much of it can be done at affordable prices. You could even pick up notes with notable signers, including several who signed the Dec. of Ind.. That particular note that you signed is pretty interesting to me, specifically with the "Tis death to counterfeit" warning. Also, it was printed by John Dunlap, who is the fella responsible for printing the first copies of the Declaration of Independence (which were called Dunlap Broadsides). Definitely a hobby worth pursuing. I have about 6 or 7 notes myself.

Colonial paper currency was first used because the British wouldn't let the colonies have coinage(printer and inventor Benjamin Franklin introduced the concept of paper notes to the colonies...signers of these notes were usually successful businessmen and colonial leaders... often the same notes contained signatures of patriots and supporters of the Crown. I am trying to collect examples of each of the original 13 colonies...your note pictured is from Pennsylvania and looks to be in very fine condition value around $85. notes from the other colonies are much more costly and you will need to spend between $150 and $500 for each average note. Also you can collect continental notes which were issued to fund the war for independence(revolutionary war).Good luck!

I have that book and it is a great book to have. I bought one used. Much cheaper than buying it new.
These notes are great to collect. I just have one so far, that I bought a couple of years ago. They are expensive to collect.

If you are going to collect in this interesting and historical area, ALWAYS be vigilant of fakes.

Sorry for the blurry obverse. Only have two of these so far but am on the hunt for more. I'm going to have to make it to a major coin show and budget some funds to pick up a few more. Thanks for the tips.

Wow, is that a John Hart signature on that Jersey note? Interested in selling/trading it?
