G'day chefhemi13:

The alloy is quaternary metal, .500 silver, .400 copper, .050 nickel, .050 zinc.
1931 is a rather common date, this coin probably is valued at around bullion value in this condition.

Welcome.

Half a crown was two shillings and sixpence, written "2/6".
( 12 pennies = 12d = 1 shilling = 1s )
{20s = £1 )

FID DEF is a latin abbreviation meaning "defender of the faith".
IND IMP means emperor of India.
The text on the obverse translates as - "George 5th, by the grace of God, of all the Britons, King"

The large shield has the arms of England top left and bottom right, Scotland top right and Ireland bottom left.

When I was a child about 1/2 century ago I was from a poor working family. I saw a half-crown so rarely at first I had difficuly telling it from a florin, (2s, the next coin down). As a treat I would be given 1s for a Saturday afternoon. 6d would get me into the pictures and the other 6d bought me a big bag of sweets, so your half crown would have been worth something in its day. It is the equivalent of 12.5p in UK decimal money ( post 1971 ) and now would buy practically nothing!

That's in quite a good condition for a George V; they did the rounds in circulation a lot and often appear in quite a poor condition.

Up to 1919 they were made in 92.5% Silver, then up to 1946 in 50% Silver. Then they changed to Cupro-Nickel which seemed to wear a lot less due to it being a harder material.

There's a lot more info on the Wiki page...

A nice find in that condition.

According to Tony Clayton's 'Coins of the UK' site:
http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/coins.html

CV in UK Pounds is:
Denom Year F VF EF Unc
2/6 1931 5 8 18 35
