I went to Pawn USA back in my old homestate and picked up some junk silver coins for under spot price. I got a 1967 Kennedy for $4, two Washington quarters for $5 a piece, and 38 War Nickels for $40. That 1967 Kennedy is not that shiny. It's just poor lighting or something. Pay no attention to the $99.99 sticker on the plastic bag. At first, the dealer offered me $50 but soon after, changed it to $40. I think the reason for this is because he wanted to get rid of the nickels. He said that he rarely sees them in his shop. I'm guessing most folks don't know that nickels, at one time, had 35% silver in them. I took the $40 deal. However, it wasn't until well after I left that I realized that there were only 38, not 40 nickels like it says on the bag. But I won't complain because I am happy with my purchase; I paid an average of $1.05 for each nickel, when spot price makes them about $1.83 each. Here are the nickel dates and mintmarks: 1942P 1942S x2 1943P x15 (You would think there would not be so many) 1943S x3 1944P x6 1944D x2 1945P x7 1945D 1945S This was a good day. May I use some dancing fruit?

Nice! It's funny, I have found seven War Nickels since I started roll hunting last year, and FIIVE are 43 P. They're everywhere. I did find a nice AU 43 P in a loomis bank roll.

Around here the pawn shops thinks that there stuff is gold. They ask way over spot and won't budge at all. I always counter and when they won't come down I walk. The other day they wanted $15 for a 67 kennedy. The thing is someone is paying that because when I came back a couple of days later it was gone. One of these days I just won't stop in there to see what they have because they are crazy on their pricing.

The only pawn shop around here selling coins is asking 40 times face for common silver, and they look at me like I'm trying to rip them off when I ask if they can do better. Nice finds!

Sadly that is what is ruining a portion of our hobbies buying opportunities. It hit the live auction scene locally a couple of years ago and now is spilling over into other buying venues. I just hope it doesn't start to happen the legit coin shops.

I'm with many of you. The pawn shops around here treat silver like gold and there are no deals. Good purchase.

I went by a pawn shop in the next town the other day. Apparently, they added 90% silver coins about a month ago. They charge near melt on dimes and quarters, but way over on halves and dollars. They had one War Nickel, and didn't know what it was worth. I bought some quarters and they threw the nickel in for 3x face!

Pawn shops are not generally a winning situation .....or the best bang for your buck....when it comes to "the consumer". It usually goes BEYOND normal decent fair "retail profiting". And make no mistake..... THEY KNOW WHAT JUNK SILVER IS GOING FOR ! They'll buy it as cheap as they can and sell it for as high as they can. (often hoping for the under-educated coin buyer to come in)(And they get A LOT of the general public coming in off the street to either buy or sell silver coins to them) They are at the shop owners mercy if they "need the money". And if they "have" the money and out of a mild curiosity, they want to "buy some neat silver coins"........the shop owner makes a NICE profit there too. JUST GENERALLY NOT A GOOD PLACE TO GO COIN HUNTIN' ! But, having said all of that......it's not EVERY shop....and congrats on the pick-ups !
