I emailed the seller with a theory that it could have been fasioned into a chip or game piece of some kind. Yeah it's too bad but, if done back in the day, how were they supposed to know

Try to remember that very few people are Numismatically educated. A coin to them is a coin and nothing more. Same people would make any coin into a bracelet, necklace, etc. by drilling holes in them. Look how many melt down similar coins for the metal. Ever wonder how many 1909S VDB's have been melted for Copper?

From the patina on the coin it appears that the work done to it happened a VERY long time ago when the value of the coin was probably not much more than one cent. Of course, we will never know exactly when but, we do have a very interesting piece of folk art, Americana if you will, and the new owner will have a very nice conversation piece to add to their collection.
