Hi everyone I'm a newbie!

I have just gotten into being interested in coins and my brother gave me a roll of washington dollars he bought. My question is this:

In doing a little internet research I read about "godless dollars" Is this roll of coins more valable unopened? I kinda have an itch to open it up but it seems like maybe breaking it open wouldn't be a good idea. He went to school in Philly and bought the roll in 2007. It says NF String and he told me he just picked it up at a local bank at the time.

Any advice would be appreciated!

to CCF. Your title doesn't match your question. To open or not to open. If you don't open it you will never know if you have any errors or varieties in there

So there's no value to a roll of coins other than the value of the coins themselves inside. Is that what you're saying?

Is it a roll of dollars or quarters? In most cases and especially in the case of varieties, it is better to open the roll and find out exactly what you have rather than speculate on what you may or may not have. Some rolls are indeed worth more as a whole, the postmarked First Day of Issue 2009-10 Lincoln Cent rolls and the P&D set rolls sold directly by the Mint are two examples that come to mind. However, paper is usually just a functional tool to hold a group of coins together in a defined amount and not a value adder.

If you don't know what is in the roll it is only worth face value. And there is no way to know what is in it without opening it.

I haven't done any research into it, but is there any info out there on how many of the "godless error" Washington errors are out there?

There are auctions where sellers will put up a roll like this on ebay and really dramatize the auction with all kinds of crazy sayings and words into thinking it is possible that it could be a roll of plain edge dollar coins and hope to sell it for much more than face value, but it is a really long shot.

If it was mine, I'd just open it up and check. Most likely it doesn't have plain edges, but you don't know until you open it. I know many thousands were found in FL. I met one of the dealers at a coin show that had and sold many hundreds of them, way back then at a coin show in Charlotte, NC. He was a dealer from FL though.

I have heard anywhere from 50,000 to 300,000 plain edge Washington dollars are out there.
