Hi to all and many thanks to those who've taken the time to respond to my questions.

I found this one in a small grouping of coins purchased a couple of months ago. There were lots of commons but this was mixed in the lot. It is an 1870 Shield nickel with a 180 degree die rotation and a doubled date. I took one picture using a mirror to show the rotation. I was informed that the date doubling was not uncommon but the 180 degree rotation was scarce. I was also told that Shield nickel collectors are not as pay-happy as Morgan collectors.
1. How rare is the rotation degree for this coin?
2. Is the value weak?

Any other comments or questions?

an estimated 13 - 30 Shield nickels from 1870 exist with a rotation between 90 and 180 degrees. fortunately (for the buyer) and unfortunately (for the seller), there is very low demand for rotated coins and there is usually a low premium (probably $20 for this coin).

As noted rotated reverses are nothing usually even noted and in many instances, missed. Usually if you put a coin in a 2x2, then turn it over, any rotations are more noticable.
Mercury dimes and Buffalo nickels are famous for those rotations. Many dealers don't even like them and seldom ask for more money for those. Note in the famous Red Book, pages 404 to 407 on error coins a rotated reverse is not even mentioned.
As to a doubled date, it appears to be more of a worn die than a doubled date.
Yet still a nice oddity for an error collector.

Hi .. nice shield
date doubling the 1870 has very few recorded RPD's compared to other dates in the series (only 7 or so) most of them are in south direction .. yours is in a West-North direction . it also seems to be flat surfaced which would say to me that it is Machine/mechanical doubling.

still an interesting coin and I would gladly have it in my collection

The date does look like Strike Doubling.

and 180 degrees is very unusual.

Premium? No idea.

But this is a good rotation
