Ok guys I tried to take some photos showing the true color. But its really hard with this coin.
Lets start with the obverse...

Natural-Or-Not?-LWC

I'm thinking its some sort of chemical tone. Look where I put the red arrow. See how there is a line dividing the color going up and to the left. I am thinking something was maybe applied with a Q-tip or something...
The purple just seems to look funny to me, and the blues on the shoulder and behind his head are a really bright metallic blue. It also looks like there is a halo around his head because of the lighter tone color.

On to the reverse!

Natural-Or-Not?-LWC

I put arrows next to the first two streaks on the right. You can see how the start at the bottom and streak up. It looks like there are 5 or so...

I always thought it was some sort of chemical tone... maybe ms70? I have never used ms70 before so I cant say for sure. If its not AT I'll like it even more. What do you guys think? I was just pointing out what I thought was odd about the colors. I have a few other brown/purple toners but this one really stands out from those... Its more of a red/purple toner...

The break you point out on the front could be caused by something it was sitting against, another coin, a folder, paper from a roll, anything. In fact, I'd call it a mark in favor of a "natural" source of toning. Same with the streaks on the reverse. I would buy that as a naturally toned coin with confidence and would happily pay a premium over an "ordinary" example of the date in a similar grade.

Very nicely toned cent. And it isn't MS-70, since there are some specs/dings on it, rim dings, and it is toned, but it is a high grade MS coin. Like around a 65 or a 66.

The old whitman folders had stripes of glue over the entire backing, including where the coins laid. This could cause striped toning on the backs of coins (especially silver ones), so perhaps that is what has happened here. If so, this is a much nicer tone than what happened to the silver coins, as their stripes usually ended up very dark and unattractive.

Yup. The naming confusion is reason enough to dislike MS70 (the product), let alone its dubious purpose.
Rest in Peace

LincolnGuy -- I'm new at this but I see what you mean. It is a great looking coin but the rim has dings and the letters on the reverse have dings and yet the coin is remarkably clean. Maybe that is possible...but add that to the purple spots...hmmmm...it does make one wonder.

But it is still a great looking coin.

I wonder if the cleaning products leave a scent.

For anyone confused about my MS70 statement I was talking about the chemical called MS70 and NOT the grade.

That coin was glued to something and the glue was later removed with acetone.

That does not look like a natural tone to me thad.

Is CaptainFwiffo correct? Did you post that a while back? (about the glue)

I seem to vaguely remember something like that at some time..

I have been messing around with pennies so I can spot a fake toned one, and well its not easy!
I love toners but I want natural toned ones and not artificial toned.. But that is a touchy subject.

My coin (from ebay) and thads look to be some sort of liquid chemical tone. Whether its glue or wet coin flip I have no idea.
So I would call them AT (even if someone didnt do it intentionally)

This is another one I own. I also got this one off of ebay like the 1949. (different seller)

I would call this one NT. It looks natural to me. Again whether its intentionally toned or not I cant say for sure, but I'm betting its not.

Here are some of the ones I have been messing with.

This is a heat toned penny.. Quite obvious. You can see where it was grabbed by pliers on the sides and they acted like a heat-sink and it didnt tone around where I grabbed it with them. You can also see how the colors are not as sharp as on thads coin.
