Open Or Closed 3 On This 1873 Quarter?

epikur Pillar of the Community Sweden 729 Posts	Posted 03/22/2012 5:18 pm Tried to compare it to online pics, but can't make it out...it's hard to tell the difference, at least I have troubles making out what is a closed and what is an open 3... anyways, I rely on the experts in here, is this an open or a closed 3? (here's a closeup of my 1873 SL quarter's 9, with Arrows)date): I believe all the 1873 Seated Liberty quarters "with Arrows" have the Open 3 date. The "non-Arrow" quarters have the Open and Closed 3 varieties of which the Closed 3 is much more expensive/valuable. I don't have a Closed 3 Quarter but here's an 1873 Seated half dollar without Arrows and with a Closed 3 in the date. I believe the date spacing and patterns between the 2 coin types are similiar and hopefully can illustrate the difference between the open & closed 3. Just by looking at the two pics...I might see an elongated upper half of the 3...is that a tell? I'm lousy at this, and looked though so many pics online without noticing a difference between the two... Report this Post to the Staff

oih82w8 Pillar of the Community United States 7840 Posts	Posted 03/22/2012 5:39 pm Compare the distance between the serifs (balls) on the 3. The closed 3's serifs are closer than the open 3's serifs.
