It is a $20 double-eagle gold coin (about 900 survived) and hard to find in the market.

The same type coin (AU58) just sold $8,000+BP in the aution.

I saw an "AU DETAILS Improperly Cleaned" coin, should I buy it and how much?

Thank you for your ideas!

A problem coin will always be just that, "a problem coin".
SInce you didn't include any details it would be impossible to say what you should offer.
I wouldn't buy it though.

Hi !

For my opinion, how depending what is the " improperly cleaning " At least you must be able to clean them corectly but if it's a coin with high value probably that some method are already been try.

If it left only 900, it's sure that same at about good it have a value lol This coin have a value but the question is how much ?

Without any picture it's hard for everybody to say something but for me if it was " clean cleaned " in A.U. the value will not be more that EF or maybe VF , if the coin re in bad shape maybe to price of a very good to fine but without pic....

Good luck !

I'll buy any coin if the price is right. Some coins labeled "Improperly Cleaned" show no signs of cleaning at all while others have been scrubbed with steel wool.

A picture is worth a thousand words in this case.

You could try paying say the F price, cracking it from its holder, putting it in your change pocket for a month, and then sending it in for a clean grade of say VF.......

If the price was right, I would. Eye-appeal is everything.

I prefer not to buy them but every so often my practical side wins out and I'll buy that expensive coin that I couldn't otherwise get at that discounted price. I've only done it a couple of times and paid about 50-60% of list price. It bugs me a bit for a few hundered bucks I can live with that! :-)

Remember, this is a gold coin, the softest of any numismatic metal. Any circulated gold coin will appear cleaned, usually what I call 'pocket polish'. If it is a good deal, and a decent AU grade with eye-appeal, with a surviving number of 900, and you need that date... Then buy it.

Let me ask this question: how often does that date show up in shows/auctions, in grades AU or better?

With 900 surviving (not scarce)and an MS62 selling for $10K,a circulated problem coin is probably worth less than a quarter of that, closer to BV than to $8K IMHO

Normally, I would say don't buy it, but If the cleaning is not too harsh, expect this American key date to still go quite high, probably more than you think to be a bargain.
