At the risk of looking foolish, will someone here care to comment on this coins authenticity?

I have no confidence in judging these types of Greek coins.
That's why mine are always lesser types and I still mostly buy from good dealers.
To me the coin looks good but don't run out and buy it on that advice.

You know me...I don't hold back. Weight? Diameter? Dealer? Philip of Macedon, perhaps? I'll dig through the databases.

This is why for the most part I stay away from buying Greek silver coins. I know so little about these coin that I would have been easily fooled by this one.

stevex6, Thankfully, I've never had that happen... RUN! Thanks Apollo--I'll get the Philips sorted out someday. I'm pretty inexperienced with these, but the horse looks a bit weak, and the inscription is rough. I just figured if a coin like this was a copy, it would be documented somewhere. FORVM's database is great!

DVC => hmmmm wow, you've certainly earned the title of "The King of the Nay-Sayers!" => aka => The Devil's Advocate Note => for the record => I've already had one 3rd-party dealer say that those four coins were actually very nice ... but "if any of them was suspect", the surface of the Dionysian TET Maroneia was the only coin that "may" be suspect ... but most likely the pock-marked surface of the reverse was due to a corroded and/or harshly cleaned die rather than a cast (because the weight was correct) ... blah-blah-blah ... but again => I'm still gonna get those 4 coins officially 3rd-party graded (assessed) .. and regardless, they are gonna stay in my stable ... they're either gonna be my "4 awesome Greek coins", or they're gonna be the "4 examples of counterfeit Greek coins" ...

Stevex6, thanks for the vote of confidence! Happy to know you don't think I'm nitpicky on your coins I do have a good eye for details, although no real experience...unless knowing a little about classical Greek art counts. Whether they're real or copies, it can't hurt to follow-through on questions raised--it's cheap insurance to be 100% sure. Happy to help out--I also do a lot of research before I pay more than $100 for a Greek coin--I'm learning just like you! Quote: ...most likely the pock-marked surface of the reverse was due to a corroded and/or harshly cleaned die rather than a cast (because the weight was correct) I noticed that too--and searched around for a coin with similar damage--I didn't find any, but that's hardly condlusive. But, I still think for 3 coins to have some odd things going on--and sold by the same person--that's something that gets my attention.

Once you can see a comparison it becomes obvious.
Especially the obv.
I will never buy a coin like this without running it through CCF ancients first and then lots of reseach. Probably won't ever buy a real coin like this, unless I hit the lotto.

Doucet: For high value ancients I do all that you have suggested, then ONLY buy from a highly reputable source anyway, as well as keeping all of the purchase information.
That policy gives you a warmer, fuzzier felling during your period of custodianship.
That way, in the future, your coins are easier to sell (if you have to), and you should get a better price.
