Well, I just started collecting a couple months ago. I started with halves, then my attention went to nickels. I got two dated Buffalo nickels before getting my first dateless. I decided to give it a bath in vinegar to see if I had any luck.

I e-mailed a member on here (weerdsteev) because he seemed to know a lot about Buffalo nickels. I showed him the pictures (that I posted in my nickel thread in the roll hunting forum). He has said that he would bet $100 that it is in fact an overdate, but I figured I would let others chime in, too. He said the messed up "F" is a sign, and also the flat top of the 8. Also, he mentioned that if there is a front to back die rotation, that it is it. Which it does.

Here are the pictures I could get with my camera phone:

1918-D-18/17?
1918-D-18/17?
1918-D-18/17?

I'm hoping!

Also, although it is restored, would it be worth getting slabbed?

Looks like one to me. You can get acid-dated buffaloes slabbed - I know ANACS does it - but they obviously won't be in a problem-free slab. If you're submitting to NGC or PCGS I would inquire beforehand.

Defintely worth a shot at sending it to ANACS I'd bet a 75% chance of an overdate coming back in a details holder! Great pick.

It looks like it has a very good chance of being the overdate.

Top of the 7 is way to clear to be anything else. Might well be a thousand dollar find.

Thanks again, everyone. You all have me excited!

Just Carl - A thousand dollars? I could understand getting that price if I didn't have to restore the date with vinegar, but I thought doing so dropped the price DRASTICALLY?
Rest in Peace

All depends on the buyers. I've seen acid dates go for fine prices.

I would say the date is legible enough that an acid test won't be necessary. But boy is it close to being gone, glad it wasn't thrown into somebody's pocket a couple more times, that date might have been history! Great find.

I believe the picture is the "After acid" result.
