I'm getting back into coin collecting after a 20+ year hiatus. Previously I was very big into collecting Jefferson Full Step Nickles. Back then it was all raw coins, TPGs did not have a designation yet for "Full Steps", and it was all about the step quality. An MS63 coin with well struck clean steps would command a premium over an MS65 coin with full steps with nicks and/or abrasions on it. I guess my main question is has that changed over the years? Many, if not most, of the TPG graded coins I've seen since getting back into the hobby with the "Full Steps" designation I wouldn't pay a nickel for. The step quality is really poor. Has this part of the hobby changed to collecting high grade slabbed Jeffersons with the designation "Full Steps" regardless of what the steps look like? Back when I collected before there was a large full step nickel club headed by a gentleman named Adolf Weiss. He was THE full step GURU. Every few months he would run an auction of the best of the best full steps nickles. Is there anything in the hobby like that now? Thanks. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by gary1218 03/23/2012 3:13 pm

I gotta agree with the statement most TPG's Full Step nickels aren't worth a nickle today. Seems like they are passing off all kinds of dreck on collectors as full step designations lately. For me a full step must have 5 full steps minimum and no blemishes on or through the steps, no hits, ticks of breaks of any kind.

I don't have the answers to your questions, but hopefully this can help you see what has lately been written about it. This web site had potential for nickels and then all of a sudden he stopped updating it. http://varietynickels.com/pages/jef...ll-steps.phpGlad to hear there is someone else out there that likes the nickel.

I too hate it when someone grades a coin by one item. Full steps on a Jefferson nickel could well have the Obverse all messed up, worn extensively, dented, etc and yet the Reverse still may have the so called Full Steps. Same with other coins like the Mercury dime that is always noted as FSB's. The Ovberse could be worn flat and possibly some idiot would still say but it has FSB's. So much emphasis is placed on Full Steps on a Jefferson nickel that I do guess it is one of the first places worn.

All you have to do is mention TPGs and you know that standards have really lowered over the years.
