This is my first capped bust half. I'm new to grading the series - any thoughts? Based on the grading notes in the coin facts section, I'm going with F12. Thanks for your help!   |

Nice one! I'm not an expert but I see VG8 IMO. The Pluribus on the back is very often a weak strike.

I'm thinking borderline G-6 net with it possibly just barely getting into VG range based on photograde. It has a G-6 obverse with a slightly better VG-8 reverse. Nice coin although in a very collectable early series!

Thanks for all the comments! I agree that my initial grade was too optimistic. Once I dug out my copy of photograde and started to spend some more time looking at the pictures, I downgraded slightly  Still, I'm really happy with this coin and glad to have it in my collection. |

Be careful CBHs are very addictive! I started with 2 low end examples for my 7070 but couldn't resist a 'few' more.  |

I'd have to say G6 as well. The reverse rim not strong enough for VG.

IMHO, I'll depart from the majority on this coin's grade, as uneven wear is quite common for this series. This oldtimer says it's a VG-10. The shield is fine! The pleasing planchet and even gray color add to the coin's appeal for me. So many of these old ladies have been cleaned over the years. This one looks pleasingly original ... nice pick-up!

I like a VG8 grade for this CBH. (Of course, ANY Capped Bust half dollar is a good one!)  IMO, most of the coin's weakness on the reverse (including rim) is due to the strike. |
