What do you think of the design? Any thoughts? And is this going to be a long running, year after year, series like the kookaburras? (Image taken from https://www.newcastlecoins.com.au)

Very interesting design. Cute little critter.
I collect the Kookaburras and the Lunar Coins, and if this one becomes yearly, I probably will collect it also.

I would of thought a backround of leaves would be softer than what looks like a jaggered rock wall. It does sound like there will be a 2008 version. Since it is a Perth Mint issue, I'll probably pass on collecting this one. I'm trying to keep up with the flood of $1 coins from the RAM this year.

Looks cute enough. Just a note though, Mila_cent, Koalas are not bears. Although just about everyone calls them Koala Bears. Steve

Pretty coin, but Perth Mint issues dont interest me and judging by the resale value they dont interest many others either.

That would be because Perth issues are priced too far above bullion. The Koala is supposed to be a bullion coin but is double bullion value at release. Bullion hunters arn't interested in them, there's better value in round 50c, predecimal silver or silver bars. Investors arn't interested in them as they often go backwards from issue price. That leaves the odd collector that buys them for aesthetics. In the short to medium term Perth Mint issues seem to be a flop right at release. Some Perth issues have very low mintages, however there are so many variations of the issue with their privy marks. I have to wonder if maybe in 50 or more years collectors will be hunting these rare releases. They may become valuable after all, but I reckon we will all be dead by then!

I plan to be here in 50 years To be honest, I didn't like the design, there's something wrong with it. And you're completely right about the prices Learjet. they're too high compared to teh bullion price.

I also think he's cute. The background design is representative of something but, I just can't put my finger on what. Do you know? Although I pretty much am a "bullion buyer" I do like to dabble in figure and animal coins and will take a look at the Koala if it becomes a series. I'm working on my Silver ML series at the moment though.
Looks nice Snooba!

WOW I like It , My wife is a big fan of Koala. And I Like the modern Art design, which had to be a complex Die design. The RCM and The RAM are starting to Lead the way In inivative products and design.

Scoutjim99 - These coins are from the Perth Mint, which is a separate entity from the Royal Australian Mint. The Perth Mint specialises in bullion coins & NCLT, whereas the RAM is responsible for our circulating currency.

I think they are going for roughly $30/$34 Australian. They are available from the following dealers & stores if you wanted to have a closer look at them: www.newcastlecoins.com.au www.downies.com.au www.perthmint.com.au www.prospectstampsandcoins.com.au www.peterstrich.com.au I'm sure that you can get them from lots of other places, too. But these are the stores that I am familiar with.

this will be a new yearly series, I dont mind the koala theme, in fact I think it will appeal more than the Kookaburra in the end.
