latebloomer Valued Member United States 122 Posts	Posted 03/24/2012 12:37 pm I have been really studying the coin grading descriptions. as I understand one thing there are plenty more to learn. for example, I looked on ebay today and this is posted : 1878 7/8 tf strong Morgan silver dollar pcgs ms-62 b. : I understand most of it accept why the word "strong" is in there. To me the coin doesn't look that good for what the grade is. I understand what the ms-62 means but not the "b." as a knew person that has been learning and taking advice from all of you in this room. I need help for someone to explain this to me. I will be collecting 1878 series silver Morgans. Thank you. Report this Post to the Staff

oih82w8 Pillar of the Community United States 7840 Posts	Posted 03/24/2012 12:39 pm IMO, "strong" refers to the amount of details that have been produced by an "early die strike", a fresh new die used produces the strongest strikes, which brings up to most detail. SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 03/24/2012 1:04 pm In this context, "Strong" refers to the number and strength of tailfeather transfer from the previous 8TF dies which were overstruck to the 7TF design. Some of the 7/8TF varieties show the original tailfeathers more strongly than others. Report this Post to the Staff
SeatedNut Pillar of the Community United States 2797 Posts	Posted 03/26/2012 10:12 am latebloomer, I believe the 'b' is a seller code and has nothing to do with the grade on the slab. As SuperDave pointed out "strong" relates to the length and number of underlying 8TF on the 7/8TF coins. If you visit VamWorld and look at Vams 33 and 38 you will see the difference. 33 is classified as weak and 38 is strong. There are other examples ... check out the VAM 42. PCGS and ANACs will denote the 7/8TF "Weak" in the grade. NGC calls these 7TF varieties. Report this Post to the Staff
westcoin Pillar of the Community United States 9792 Posts	Posted 03/27/2012 9:58 pm Yep Super Dave is correct on the strong/weak tailfeathers on 7/8 varieties, but as to the "B" never seen that on a slab after the grade, are you sure it's on the actual paper in side the holder and not a sticker or written on the outside of the slab? A * or + is common as are some other designations like FBL, FB, FS, Full Bell Lines, Full Bands, Full Steps, etc. It could be part of a variety designation like a B1 Rev possibly but there should be a VAM in front of it on a Morgan or Peace dollar only.
