Hey, All... I got a nice haul of US 90% silver coins from APMEX today. I appreciate the fact that they use FedX as one of their shippers because they do a good job and they deliver on Saturday. This order included: A $100 face bag (10 $10 rolls) of BU Kennedy half dollars and 10 rolls of the proof Statehood Quarters. Both are gorgeous with like new finishes. I watch the dealer prices closely. Sometimes the $100 bags are cheaper than the price of 10 $10 rolls of coins and sometimes not. I go with whichever is lower and that usually saves enough to cover the shipping and sometimes a bit more. Here is a pic: This addition brings my hoard up to 927 oz and concludes the US 90% part of my collection... unless some especially nice Morgans come along, that is. Barring that possibility, I will probably finish off the 1000 oz. amount with some 1-oz. bars or rounds. Once I reach the ~1000 oz. goal I will then start adding some gold to the mix. Will probably stay with US or Canadian coins in the 1/4 and 1/2 oz. sizes. There is usually a little more premium to pay for the smaller sizes on a per oz. basis but the handiness of these sizes makes it worth the extra cost... to me, anyway. This was definitely a good day. Heck, even the sun is shining now.

It's always fun to see one of those white, brick-shaped APMEX boxes arrive. Very nice additions, Ed_B!

Wow - nice purchase Ed. When it comes to 90%, I tend to get the 1964 Kennedy's as I am from Dallas, TX. The Morgans/Peace dollars are also interesting and I would like a little stack of those pieces.

Are you going to open the rolls of halves, and put them into the bag? Quote: This addition brings my hoard up to 927 oz Wow! That's amazing

Thanks for the congrats, guys. I appreciate that and pass them along to others who are adding to their stacks too. Just remember, Hawk, that APMEX is a business that buys and sells PMs, so they must charge more than they pay to keep the doors open and the lights on. That said, the difference between what they charge and what they pay shrinks a lot in value when silver prices rise. Imagine that it is now 2020 and silver is about $200 an oz. Well, gee... maybe APMEX will ONLY pay me $180 per oz. for these coins. Heh heh... yeah, I CAN live with that! You're right CW... just the sight of one of those boxes sets off my tingle alarm! Quote: When it comes to 90%, I tend to get the 1964 Kennedy's as I am from Dallas, TX. The Morgans/Peace dollars are also interesting and I would like a little stack of those pieces. I like half dollars and dollars. The Kennedy halves are cheaper than the Walking Liberty and Franklin halves, so are a little better buy in terms of dollars per oz. of silver. I also have some quarters and dimes because they could be very useful for small change / purchases at some point in the future. The Statehood Quarters are great because they are all gorgeous proofs and they cost less than circulated Washington quarters. Lotta bang for the buck with them. Quote: Are you going to open the rolls of halves, and put them into the bag? For now, the Statehood Quarters are in plastic tubes inside the bag. The halves are in plastic tubes too but just in the APMEX box on a shelf in my safe. I need some tubes for them. They are in $1 coin tubes now, which are too big for them but are all I have at the moment. Will be ordering some tubes that fit them better shortly. Yes, I will open them all and inspect the coins but will be wearing some cotton gloves for that. I like those coin bags but don't want to put any loose coins in there. The tubes offer better protection from air and from rubbing on each other. Quote:i would like to see picks of the rolls of proof Statehood Quarters. also what states are they? Most of the tubes that the Statehood Quarters came in had state initials on them but I didn't pay much attention to that. I do not collect the states as a set and only bought these because I wanted some more 90% silver quarters and these are the highest quality / lowest price that APMEX has. You can see some of the states initials on the ends of a few of the tubes in the pic. Any that don't have these initials are probably mixed state tubes.

Ed,
You can probably see me if you glance into your rear view mirror. I'm about a car length back at 910 oz. Let me know when you cross the finish line. We'll start the 1000 oz. club.

Hey Ed, I rarely sell to where I work, but like you said if I bought 100 oz. form them when silver is at 32 per oz., and then sold back to them when silver was 100 an oz., and they were gonna pay me REAL close to spot (something the public could not get that close to spot since I work there), so say like a buck back, yeah I as well would be more then fine with that pal, lol .... And like you said one huge key word OVERHEAD. Not easy for coin stores to stay in business in this NEW computer fast pace world. Coin shops, comic shops, DVD rental stores like Blockbuster, all OBSOLETE nearly. Bad economy, why go to Blockbuster an pay 4 bucks, even with a free 5th rental or something, when one can get a Red-box dvd for $1.25? Or Net-flix instant stream, or buy silver online for fair price, save gas an time, get two days later, all parties are happy..... The businesses today with the best marketing an products ran by SMART competent people, verse the lowest overhead have the greatest chance to survive I figure..... Do you think Provident or APMEX would still be in business today, if they had not kept up with the times, an upgrading at one point to selling online, doubt it.....

With that amount of silver you could make some serious trades between silver and gold to try and take advantage of a fluctuating GSR (gold-to-silver ratio). If you time things correctly you can increase your stack with little expense.

Quote: Not easy for coin stores to stay in business in this NEW computer fast pace world. No kidding, Silverhawk74! I can't say that I've been to every "brick and mortar" coin shop around town but it's clearly been hard times on a few. Having little or no patience to answer questions or acting so "under siege" you'd think they were working at a quickie mart in the worst part of town doesn't help to grow new business, either. Anyway, like you said, some shops will find a smarter way to keep doing business and adapt. There are good local shops, no question about that. But Ed_B got some great coins and reliable service going through APMEX.

Hawk, I'm more of a ebay buyer than a coin shop aficionado but the few pawn/coin shops in the area are doing poorly. And wait until the old-timers have cashed in their last chips. The closest coin shop to me doesn't do much ebay business and I think he may need to change his game plan if he wants to survive/thrive. Just a hunch, anyway.
