I don't know about the mint mark but it could just be a hit from another coin. It looks like crud on the coin to me. Maybe an acetone soak for it might help?

first off can you post some pictures of the whole coin both obverse and reverse. in some pictures it looks like a S mint mark but in others it looks like a D mint mark. I am thinking it could very well be a S over D error. but I am no expert just my humble opinion.

Looks like a D PMD. I highly doubt its a MM variety for this coin gone to heck and back. When MMs take hits it can look like all different kind of letters.

It is a 1978-D half dollar. A 1978-S is a proof coin. This one is not a proof coin. It is a circulation damaged coin. You can see the coin scratches in that area and one ends right on the mint mark.

This is a 1978D coin with a lot of damage, including the mintmark.
